I can't believe what I am reading! Mimosas invasive? I wish. Here in Hingham, Massachusetts, I am lucky to get a mimosa to grow. It's a 50:50 deal in that I lose about half to the cold winters. I have five that are now well established and seem to be winter hardy. My largest one just went into bloom and it is a show stopper! I see cars slow down when they drive by the tree just stare at it. The bees and hummingbirds got nuts for it. I have never seen another mimosa in my town of about 30,000 people. I occasionally find a mimosa seedling in one of my flower beds. It is rare and hardly a nuissance. In fact, two of my seedlings have developed into six-foot high trees. I'm proud that I was able to nurture them into healthy trees. Aboit four years ago, I was lucky enough to get a summer chocolate mimosa. For the first time, it started blooming yesterday and it is a real beauty. In short, here in New England, mimosas are like rare gems. I wish I had even more in my yard. Barring significant climate change, the cold winters will never allow these beauties to be an invasive species.

I had an interesting experience as a first time mimosa planter, and can confirm a lot of what is said in this thread. Points of interest: -Seeds that did not germinate are likely stubborn, not dead. I had some planted 4 MONTHS and suddenly sprouted after major neglect. I was shocked. I believe HEAT (80-90) was the trick -I tried all sorts of methods, soaking, chipping, light, dark, etc. I cannot determine what is best. However, I can say I had better luck germinating seeds in COIR than a peat moss seed starter. -Do not let seedlings drop below 70 deg. They hate it, will turn yellow and drop their leaves. -Transplanting and survival is easy. They handle it well. However, here is a very interesting tip: use 1-1-1 ratio of peat / compost / vermiculite (or perlite). Compost was a mix of mostly steer manure and some chicken poo. But all together comprised of 1/3rd of the ratio as mentioned above. When it came time to transplant for me, I used several soils as an experiment. Commercial potting soil, dirt from outside, coir, and my custom poo mix. There is a HUGE comparison... all options sucked (little to no growth) but in my compost mix as mentioned above, they THRIVED.

Marti, this pops up everywhere around here and I see it along the roads and highways now At one time I think Janie told us what it was, but she called a ditch something ( maybe not nice) I never let them go to seed because I can't dig them out but they still end up everywhere, even hanging baskets

Hi, GS. Is this a seedling someone dug for you from the landscape, or something that was purchased at retail in the pot it's currently in? If the former, it might be that the soil used is compacting and holding much too much water. If the later, its issues still might be related to over-watering, but the results wouldn't occur as quickly or be quite as dramatic as when the soil is completely inappropriate due to excessive water retention and its tendency to compact. I'd use a wooden dowel rod or skewer, sharpened on the ends and stuck deep into the soil as a 'tell'. If it comes out moist or stained dark by the soil, withhold water. If it comes out dry, it's time to water. Check twice each day until you get a feel for the intervals between watering. If it's in topsoil or garden soil - anything that compacts easily, you really should repot as soon as the plant's health/vitality allows. Fertilizing can be addressed later, when you start to see it pushing new growth. Answers to the questions I opened with will provide us with more insight and a better sense of what remedial tack to take. Al
