Is it too early for my cutting to sprout leaves?

I've learned the hard way that leaves before roots on a cutting isn't good. The last week of July I took a cutting of Sir Thomas Lipton to root for my mother in law, I know I shouldn't but I pulled it up a week later and it was beautifully calloused and not rotting. Today I noticed that is sprouting lots of new growth. All the original leaves are still intact and healthy. Is it possible that it has really rooted and is growing this fast? Or should I go take another cutting as this one is probably wasting its energy?
