Updates and Windows 10 "Don't turn off your computer"

For a few weeks now each time I open my computer I have a notice saying that updates are available and not to shut down my computer. It takes a good 20 minutes and a notice appears saying "We could not complete the updates. Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer" This too takes forever and when it seems to be done another notice appears saying: Cleaning up 0% Don't turn off your computer, then I get to the 100% eventually and I can log in.

Anyone can help me with this? Very frustrating. Now what I do I leave my computer open all the time with the sleep option but sometimes I need to close it so the 'sleep' option is not ideal.

Windows 10 is awful on those forced updates. I don't have it (yet) on any of my computers. My mother's is updated from Win7. She doesn't use it often. Every time ... EVERY TIME I'm there the thing is unusuable for 20 to 45 mins upon being turned on while it churns for installing updates.

All automatic updates are pushed out, or "forced", as you've said. Getting stuck can happen.

I had a hiccup with a recent WIndows update. I did a "restore", let it download again the next day and then restart a few times, and all is well.

I'm not sure why anyone would view the required time as an issue. Leave the PC on overnight and whatever needs to be done should be done, so long as it doesn't get stuck.

I hadn't seen this thread when it appeared in Oct. I actually find it kinda odd. The OP has never posted again. Maybe it was indeed spam? Either way, I have really found the original Range Hood FAQ very helpful, and have emailed the link to friends cause it's such a good summary. I don't think the OP has added anything helpful to the hood FAQ, and his additions might confuse someone new to the Appliances Forum, or someone struggling with hood choices (the hardest choice for me in my kitchen!). As others have pointed out, it's odd he chose a 36" hood for a 48" range. Odd that he doesn't mention Wolf hoods in his discussion of high-end hoods, even though that's the range brand he chose. Why does he say baffles are not standard in high-end hoods - that's incorrect. And indeed, despite his contention, the greater component of noise in a hood is the airflow. You can have two identical hoods in two homes - the home with the problematic ductwork (i.e. more bends, longer, or narrower) will be noisier despite the identical motors. I think the Futuro hoods are a good brand, judging by what others have enthusiastically written on the Gardenweb about them. But I hope that people looking for helpful info on hoods in general will look at the original Hood FAQ rather than the OP's additions.

Thanks Zep. Yes, I have noticed that Win10 has begun downloading weeks ago. I don't mind that as it will be less tedious later to download all at once. I just won't install it yet. Yes, I also had a concern as to whether I "need" to reserve my copy of 10. I see when I go to Control Panel - check to Win updates, it gives me a big old blue box saying Win10 is coming soon...reserve today. I suppose it will stay like that until I reserve.

In Edge, clicking on three dots at upper right of screen or Alt-X sequence brings up the menu. Click on Settings, General, then scroll down, you come upon options for downloads. Where to save, and whether to have a pop-up ask what to do with a triggered download. I've long found it useful and easiest to create a first tier folder called C:\Download folder. That way, I can quickly get to anything that's been downloaded without having to click, click, click through unneeded layers with obscure names in the folder tree to get to what I want. Additionally, with Alt-X or the three dot entry method, another selection is Downloads. Click on that and you can see downloaded file history, open a downloaded file, examine the folder it is in through WIndows Explorer, etc.

Scheduled Win 10 updates usually get released on or about the second Tuesday of the month. My habit has been to do the update manually at a time of my own choice and NOT to wait for it to happen automatically. I save my work...close web browsers...close email...close all unneeded programs and just get it done. If you are having difficulty because the update takes too long, you might try disabling your antivirus before doing the update. Just don't forget to turn it back on after you reboot.

I assume you leave the computer on overnight while it's trying to do the updates.

No, I live the computer on overnight because it takes an hour to open it the next day. As I wrote in my message, they cannot complete the updates, then they undo the changes, then they clean...all this takes an hour and I still do not have the updates. Something is preventing me of getting those updates.

Unless it's installing updates, no computer should take more than a few minutes to boot up. If it's updating, 10 at the most. Something else may be wrong.

Try the troubleshooter after closing all programs.
1. Click the Windows icon in the lower left-hand corner and type "Settings".
2. Open the Settings app.
3. Click 'Update & Security'.
4. Select 'Troubleshoot' from the menu.
5. Click 'Additional Troubleshooters'.
6. Click 'Windows Update'.
7. Click 'Run the troubleshooter'.
