Who's prepped for Henri

Just filled up three 45 Gallon Trash bags of deadheaded Paniculata Blooms. I lost one strong framework stem last year due to a staked LL treeform and Isias. Those wet heavy blooms were no match for 120MH winds....

With Henri set to show it's face Sunday, I did some weight mitigation on the treeforms that are staked and fairly rooted. However, when I shake the main stem with my hand, there was a little bit of play of the rootball/movement of soil

Don't want to revisit losing another framework branch /UpRooting event so....

Deadheaded about 25% of the blooms and the other 75%, I just removed the center floret of each bloom (the smaller side florets remained) on the ones that did not pass the stem shake test.

Eh, I see some leaf litter already, so the trees are showing it's tired leaves already.

I guess this early deadheading is in line with the slow progression to the end of summer anyhow

1st time actually removing just the main floret of a LL. Who knew it was that easy to do, and the small florets that remain actually don't look -that bad-. It's still better than looking at a bare end of a stick .

Best way I can compare is like having a whole head of hair and it getting a crewcut.

Might use this new rain/wind/top heavy load mitigation technique for the followings years as well

Bill, It's a shame that this information wasn't posted a little more in advance. It wouldn't be out of the question to drive over with some prior planning, but with a little more than 36 hours notice, that likely won't happen. I hope some others can attend and report back. Prep sink location or no prep sink

beachem, I think your friend's sinks are too small. 24" sounds more like a desirable/large prep sink size than a main cleanup sink. I'm planning on a 33" cleanup sink--I had 30" in my previous home and want to go just a bit bigger (and a farmhouse sink) For the prep sink, I measured the double sink I currently have (and hate). Each half is just over 15" and is certainly big enough to wash veggies, wash hands, measure water out for a recipe... I find 15" a bit cramped, so, I'm planning an 18"-24" prep sink (exact dimensions to be determined--we're getting really close on a final floor plan so I'll have dimensions and can make detailed decisions.

I have a smaller kitchen and admittedly small island. But I went with a prep sink anyway and am glad I did. It is closer to the end of the island that is nearer the refrigerator and I do use it all the time while prepping fruit, vegetables etc (the sink also has a garbage disposal). Its location gives me additional room for meal prep as well as space for others using the main sink to work at without us tripping over each other. Trash cabinet is at the end nearer the main sink. Very happy I went with the prep sink.

In addition to removing the blooms, I also considered -but never decided- on pruning down by half or completely some tall specimens. Breaks my heart to prune them ahead of the damage so most of the time I do not preemptively prune. I have also considered keeping mulch to help absorb salty water (but that is no longer a problem in my current location) and discarding it afterwards. In non-salty floods, I plan to temporarily remove the mulch in order to speed up soil evaporation in the case of flooding though. I may also remove some metal barriers and rock barriers so the water will flow out of those areas and not get "stuck". Macrophyllas are salt tolerant but I do not know how much that applies to paniculatas.

So how did the grass fare out after the -freeze- '-/

I've never actually considered on my radar at all the mitigation of salt in the landscape and I'm less than 1/2 mi off the Atlantic.

When I hear tropi/hurri, I'm just focused on all things -flood-.

Went a bit OCD here after Sandy. Full Auto Genset, 4 New Pumps on hand (trash, 2 low level and 1 super low level pump (will pump down to 1/4 inch) and 300 feet of 3" Hose.

East End of the island. Feels just like a normal spring day - nothing crazy. Crazy = me seeing branches flapping left and right.

It's supposed to be 90 degrees for the rest of the week. At least I'm getting free irrigation
