What WON'T you be growing again next year?
Comments (15)This one is a tough one, because either it is something that grows like a weed and will probably grow anyway or it something I really like and keep trying just for the sake of getting it, at least until my seed packet runs out, then I may not bother with that particular variety again. That said, these are off my planting list: Moonflower - First year produced a ton of foliage, bloomed rather late (August), and didn't have enough flowers to really make it worth it. The flowers were kind of hidden too and only lasted the night, except for cold days when they lasted a little longer. Their fragrance was their saving quality, but overall it took too much space in my boulevard garden and staking it was kind of a pain. This year: It didn't bloom. Buds are on now but it will frost before they can open. Sweet Dreams Cosmos: Our season just isn't long enough for them to grow. Last year, just barely got them blooming late August or Middle September. This year it took them to October to produce buds and they won't open before it frosts and the weather goes downhill. Makes me wonder if anyone else in Zone 3/4 has trouble with these as well? Maybe If I really wanted them blooming, I need to buy them as bedding plants that have been forced to bloom before planting. Nasturtiums? I love the flowers and the spicy leaves, but they always turn yellow and grow really sickly in our container gardens. Maybe I'll try again with a different seed mix, or maybe not....See MoreWhat will you do differently next year?
Comments (15)This is a really interesting discussion. I want to get the new "Well planned perennial garden" and read it. Also, get the colors more perpetual and planned in my existing beds. Buy fewer plants and divide and tend the ones I have. Focus on the back yard and develop private spaces for us. Follow my plans for once. I think I could go on for ever. All of what everyone has already said. I have all winter to think of things. Oh my. I've started a journal of sorts and have plans for next year and treatments for problems that I noted. I have to completely reorganize the herb garden as the plants are totally misplaced for height and bloom season. And there are many more things to change in that journal I made. I want to let go of the garden earlier and stop trying to push the season. Really put things to bed before the weather discourages me....See MoreWhat was new to you this year that you will sow again next year?
Comments (14)Salvia 'Coral Nymph' - absolutely beautiful and the hummers love it too! Zinnia Profusion Apricot - pretty color, neat clumps, I may try other colors of Profusion series next year. Snapdragon 'Black Prince' - these are gorgeous and still blooming away, while the Snapdragon tall mix have faded away. But they were much shorter than I expected so they'll go in the front of the border next year. Scarlet runner bean 'Painted Lady' - has bicolor red and white blooms that are really pretty. Cardinal climber (Ipomoea x sloteri) - VERY vigorous grower, and finally started blooming in the last couple weeks with pretty red tubular flowers. The hummers love this too. I'm sure there are others and I WS'd lots of perennials, many will not bloom this year so we'll see....See MoreWhat will you do differently next year?
Comments (16)The garden is now 7 years old. Next year will be the year of propagation every which way there is to do so. Cuttings, division, collect and grow from seed, etc. No purchasing any new plants, plant exchanges don't count, I said "no purchases" ( right Vicki, we can do it) With all the new babies it will be time to establish a pot getto, the true sign that I have crossed over some kind of line in my gardening life. The other must is to master the art of composting. There is a 6'x3'x4' pile of pulled weeds, pruneings and dead headed flowers in the back corner of the yard. It has been growing there for 3 seasons hidden by the above ground pool. Next year I will dig it out and see what there is. Then that spot will be the new home of a proper compost pile....See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
