When does the ground typically freeze in my area would you say?
Comments (5)The easiest way to find out when to expect your soil to freeze would probably be to contact your county agricultural extension office (linked below). ===>>> no.. that is the laziest way .. lol ... the easiest would be to keep a trowel handy.. and go out and dig a small hole once a week AND FIND OUT WHAT IS HAPPENING IN YOUR YARD ... i gotta tell you though ... no matter how magical your soil.. and evidenced by your neighborly tree farm.. i see NO reason why a dormant tree needs that much water this late in the season ... YOU ONLY WATER WHEN IT NEEDS WATER.. and i find it a bit unbelievable.. that your finger says your soil is totally dry every week .... this late in November ... we are not all that interested in the surface... is it really dry an inch or two down??? if the pro next door.. NEVER waters his trees... why does yours need all that water??? you are on the verge of making this tree into another child... and trying to love it to death ... let it dry and do not water again.. until the your finger.. inserted to the second digit indicates the soil is dry ... and that might not be until late winter ... if not late spring ... good luck ken PS: i dont understand what ground freeze has to do with it at all ... [in my z5 .. the ground freezes some time after 1/1] .... i dont understand why you think you need to drown the thing until the soil freezes .......See MoreHow long does it take?
Comments (27)Hoakie~~ I feel your pain and am truly sorry you are having to endure this.....but I can see this from both sides. I was widowed and so was DH. Although we were alone quite some time, so we did have our time to grieve. I have "accepted" DH's first wife as a "friend"....in fact, our school pictures look so much alike we could have been twins...we have the same qualities, both majored in accounting, wore the same type of glasses, same hair color and size, use the same "slang", we both had three children and four grandchildren, etc. We chose to put away the pictures of our former spouses, but not our memories....we talk about them frequently and lovingly. We both know that we miss out original spouses and talk about them on their birthdays, our anniversaries, their days of death, etc. It was I that went and planted grass on her grave...and he said no other woman would have ever done that. I buy the flowers on Memorial Day and we go together to the graves of both former spouses. We do still use some of "their" things.....and although it is not my taste (especially the dining room set)...but I did put new upholstery on the chairs and legs on the table to change the appearance a bit....but to this day (8 years later), I always think about her when I dust them, but not in a resentful way. He said I could replace them, but they are much better quality than can be bought these days, and he actually "drags" his feet when we go to the furniture store......to him, it is a waste to spend money to replace perfectly good furniture....so I let it go at that. We did build a new home, so I don't have to live in her space. From day one, he has told me that her things are my things to use however I chose....and if they happen to get broken, so be it. Even on our wedding day, he gave me a beautiful, very expensive pearl and gold jewelry set that he had bought for his wife....I wore it a few times and have just "put it away"...and will give it to his daughter when I leave this earth. Are you not only living in "their" house, but using their things? Did you bring personal items to add to the home? I know this might "bug" you terribly right now, but help him grieve....go to the spreading of her ashes and be a support to him, but don't try to take the spotlight...just be there to hold his hand and try to make peace with the lady she was. This will give you real character and not seeming to be a threat to her memory and his family members. I assume you are not widowed....there is a huge difference between being divorced and widowed...and hope you can understand that. Grief counseling would be good for him and marriage counseling for both of you. You can make this work, but it takes a whole lot of understanding on your part.....bite that tongue if necessary, but for now, make piece with his former wife. Good luck and keep us posted as to how things are working out....See MoreHow long does it take you to paint a room?
Comments (52)Walls only, covering pale with pale ... about a day. 1 - Learn to cut in without taping, or get a paint shield. I use a wide plastic drywall blade where I need to protect. Have a wet rag so you can wipe off the woodwork if you slop over. And feather the edges several inches into the wall area. 2 - Set a pattern and stick to it. I try to roll top to bottom about 4 feet wide, ending with finishing strokes top to bottom. With a taller room, I do the top part with the scaffold, feathering it down, and then the bottom half, feathering it up. Because I'm a consistent painter, I don't end up with a darker band in the middle 3 - Learn to roll evenly with good coverage so you only need one coat. Most people spread the paint too thin and end up with streaks and blotches and a second coat. Figure 350-400 square feet per gallon. 4 - Use roller handle extensions or a scaffold so you aren't doing ladder climbing all day. 5 - Don't look back! Paint looks really bad while it's drying. Just keep going, then walk out and don't come back for a couple of hours....See MoreHit Brick Wall When Couldn't Afford or Find Builder
Comments (69)Pains me to see such good intentions go to waste though writing about the experience here will help others. This situation is why some builders advocate for being involved in the design process. Even if just a consulting roll, a collaborative team effort might have prevented this unfortunate outcome. I think designers often fear their vision will be watered down but with the right people involved, costs and alternative construction details can be evaluated as the design is developed without sacrificing design or aesthetics. Design-bid is a bit antiquated for those seeking higher performance. In my experience, everyone benefits in a collaborative approach. To address some confusion above, Passive house (PassivHaus Institute PHI) is a German born building certification. Passive House US (Passive House Institute US PHIUS) is the N. American split from the German version. Passive Solar Design is the traditional term used to describe getting free heat from the sun. Being mindful of those strategies can help reduce cooling loads in TX, like stretching a home from east to west helps minimize windows on those vulnerable directions. Keeping Homes Cooler is a blog I wrote for new and existing homes. Often Passive House homes end up with passive solar design elements as do other designs looking to maximize efficiency with no extra upfront costs. Some passive house projects are approaching cost parity with typical crappy construction. I always enjoy Steve Baczeck's articles in Fine Homebuilding. If you can't do Passive House, at least do Energy Star. This will involve a third party energy rater who will help push a home towards current international building codes. Though these codes are rarely adopted and enforced locally, they represent a very good balance of cost and efficiency. Involve the rater early in design process. Matt Risinger is an awesome resource for building in TX and anywhere in the south. I would follow his advice as much as possible. His videos and articles on airsealing, insulation, waterproofing and humidity control are particularly important....See Morekathyg_in_mi
