I would love that. it seems like there are always a few crumbs in my bins. it would be nice if I could wipe down just the bottom one.

honestly, I wish they'd bring back wire shelving in the fridge for the same reason.

I'm ok with both. I don't find anything falls through wire drawers. It's probably better for cold air circulation with wired baskets.

I have a KA French Door which is probably relatively high end - it was over $3200 so I think that puts it in that category although obviousky not a SubZero.

My freezer section has two "baskets for the top and the bottom is obviously the metal solid fabrication.

I think the configuration is quite practical - to the extent there are any crumbs or other detritus they fall down to the very bottom of the freezer so it is theoretically easy to clean it off.

My only real complaint about my freezer is that previously I had a cheap refrigerator with a top freezer and I could cram an amazing quantity of stuff in there. With pull out baskets, I have to be careful that items don't poke up preventing the baskets from shutting. But that would be true of any bottom freezer style beause they all have pull outs of one kind or another which need to clear the one on top of them :-).

ETA FWIW I also deliberately opted for a model that didn't have water in the door because I didn't like the aesthetics and I drink bottled water anyway as I don't trust the old pipes in my building.

I would be fine with either. I ordered a Bosch French door refrigerator for our reno. It seems fine, nothing special but it got very good reviews on Yale Appliance.

I don’t care to see ice and water on the door, I think it looks sleeker though I admit it’s not as handy.

You will find the basket design helps with the free movement of air keeping that section colder and foodstuffs fresher than the older closed bin style. I modified one of my refrigerator bins years ago into a basket for my vegetables and it made a noticeable difference in longevity and freshness.

You have had some very helpful insights on things I wouldn't haves thought about on my own. It definitely sounds as though I should put the fridges with the wire freezer baskets back into the possibilities category. I too have tried to focus on fridges where there is an internal water dispenser and ice on the bottom rather than the door, but I am finding that everything (especially during pandemic shortages) is going to come down to some compromise about something.

I thought wire baskets were pretty standard and desirable for freezers so that cold air flow can keep things pretty uniformly frozen. Plus the added benefit of crumbs and leaks falling to the bottom for easier cleaning. It would not have occurred to me to discount a freezer because it had wire baskets.

Get a nice water purifier at the sink and forget the water and ice on the outside of the freezer . I like the nice clean look .

I personally don't like the water dispensers because they take up precious space and the filters are weirdly expensive. my filtrete under sink system was really easy to install and super cost effective. (you still might need a filter on your fridge for an internal ice machine, but you wouldn't have to change it nearly as often.)

I have wire shelves in the freezer side of my side by side refrigerator. If I have something on the shelves that might fall through, I put a plastic container about the size of a cake pan on the wire shelf and put the small things in it. Easy to pull the plastic container out and find what you want. The other side of the side by side (the refrigerator side) has glass shelves and they are much harder to keep clean..

Realistically items that are small enough to fall through the grid would not be put in a freezer individually. If one were actually freezing tiny things - peas? cherries? small cookies? you would be putting them in some kind of container or plastic zip lock bag.

FWIW, I have very small individual ice cream cups and they are much larger than the grids of the basket I store them in.

I was pretty much sold on the idea of the wire shelf baskets. However, I just returned from the appliance store. There was a Frigidaire Professional fridge (one of their high end models) that was plugged in, and it has some plastic coated wire in the freezer. Just from being in the store, the cut tops of the wire had rust stains on them. That pretty much turned me off.

Then I guess your search continues.

FWIW the wire bins on my Kitchenaid show no signs of rust or other deterioriation and the refrigerator has been in service for about three years which I would assume is more than the amount or wear a floor model would receive.

Frigidaire refrigerators aren't particularly well rated - I am not sure whether that impacts the construction of their bins.

Ahhh..sorry to hear that. Any option to upgrade to SS? Or maybe a different brand?. This s##t drives me crazy . Honest. I feel for the designers who came up with the wire bins and know they are the way to go. Then some mucky- muck higher up cheaped out on the manufacture. Yes, after spending an more than hour at the appliance store and opening to examine every fridge that had any appeal at all to me, I was definitely able to sort out quality differences.
