Help with Rejuventaion & Emtek finishes, etc.
Comments (8)Thanks so much for all the information, everyone! There are a number of light fixtures from Rejuvenation we've fallen in love with so it's nice to know the quality is as impressive as it should be for the price. buckheadhillbilly, thanks so much for the pictures of the Emtek knobs with the rectangular rosettes. They are beautiful and look like a perfect match for the oil rubbed bronze finish on the builder grade knobs/hinges we will have in the house until I get them all changed out. Perhaps, as lolauren said, having the glass on the most heavily used part would keep the finish from getting too copper over time. (And if a few did, I could follow worthy's lead and switch them with less worn ones. Very clever!) We picked our interior door yesterday, white Jeldwen doors with a curved top panel/square bottom panel with the beadboard inset look. I think either of those knobs would be beautiful on them!...See MoreWhat's the best finish for entry hardware on a fir door?
Comments (6)We have the Emtek Greeley entryset at our cabin, and I really love the way it looks. It feels very substantial in your hand and looks like it's been there forever. I think it would be perfect with your pretty door. Ours faces the sun, however, and it gets incredibly hot in the summer, even with a small cover over the porch. I don't know whether that's usual with the darker colored handsets. Dee...See MoreEmtek entry sets - good source, and 'living finish' question
Comments (8)I'm a metalsmith. I use patinas extensively on my sculptures. Almost all patinas are surface finishes. They don't act as a paint, but rather a chemical reacts with the uppermost molecules of metal on the surface, and oxidizes those molecules. A few molecules down, and you're into plain unoxidized metal again. Most metals will oxidize naturally when exposed to the elements. The commercial ORB finishes are meant to mimic the ancient technique of sealing bronze, which is, to heat it up and plunge it into oil. The patina created by the natural aging and oxidizing process is going to be thicker and more durable. All metals take a patina differently. Also, bronze is inherently darker than brass; in its raw state it is duller, kind of pinkish, and does not have that strong yellow color we call "brassy". In addition, bronze is notoriously hard to patina well. The same qualities that make it a good choice for outdoor sculpture means it resists chemicals. Often it will be given a flash plating of copper before applying the patina chemicals: because copper is a metal that takes patinas well. Brass is easier to patina than bronze, though that too may be plated with copper first if a darker final color is desired. Surfaces can be lacquered after a patina, but lacquer wears off too. Special lacquers can be baked on, but almost never onto a dark finish: usually only onto polished, un-patinated shiny brass or copper. The heat of baking the lacquer on would wreck the dark colors. Also, most lacquers don't survive long outside. So consider the base metal of whatever your piece is. Brass will wear to be brassy. Bronze will wear to a dull tan....See MoreEmtek Hardware: any opinions?
Comments (40)DO NOT BUY EMTEK! After much research and sample comparisons and one trial install I finally made the decision and bought 22 Emtek interior door sets (lever style, oiled-rubbed bronze) for a light remodel of our home. I bought Emtek thinking I was buying premium hardware because they look and feel premium and are priced premium. They are trash! The lock pins on the privacy sets literally twist and fall out every couple months (we've lost several and went through the pain of finding replacements so we could, you know, lock the bathroom doors!). Two levers broke, as in floppy no longer functional broke. On our most used door the finish wore off after about two years. And lastly every single mounting plate loosens and I have to go around and straighten up the handles and retighten every few months (and you can't tighten too much or the lever becomes really stiff and stays stuck after turning - so awful!). Will never buy Emtek, please let my mistake save you from disappointment!...See MoreAndrea Weingard
