Is my sewing machine worth anything!? what is the year? help please!

I recent picked up a sewing machine from a thrift store, and it works perfectly! But, I can’t find any information on it! It is a Coronado de luxe zig zag sewing machine. It says Japan on it as well (shown in a picture) . The model is M91Z I believe. I just need help knowing what the year is, and it is worth anything? Anybody know anything?

I've sewn on both a White portable that died last year from the 40's and my grandmother's rotary in mahogany cabinet with no reverse on it that got sold when she had a house sale I didn't know about. I think your machine either needs a good tune up or a new bobbin case (case is relatively inexpensive). You could also have a bit of thread in the case track..try running non-waxed dental floss through it and through the threading path pulling downward from the spool pin. My other thought is are you using a different brand thread than you normally use, and I hope you are not using glazed hand quilting thread in the machine. You should look at other brands and try the machines out like you are doing now. Janome and Kenmore made by Janome are decent machines...I have a Kenmore 19365 I love to sew with. I went from a flatbed to a portable with the same adjustment you face without much of a problem and older like you with wind in place bobbin that took me a while to learn. With any new machine, read the manual from page 1 to find out what's going on. Some manufacturers have manuals you can download to read beforehand to get a better idea of what the machine will do. The nice thing with new machines is the free arm you have available for doing cuffs and small areas with storage in the bed that is on the machine. The new meachines also have an automatic needle threader that's wonderful for "mature eyes" and a plexiglass table surround to give you more area should you need it. I also used the top of the old Kenmore cabinet to sew on until the Kenmore and blonde cabinet went in the dumpster, then it was on the dining room table. You can still keep your well-loved cabinet to sew on and use underneath for storage like I did.

You adjusted something by mistake when you had it apart. Did you lower the feed dogs? Look at the needle plate are the teeth sticking up past the plate or level with it. The material won't feed through if the feed dogs are down. Look in your manual. It should have how to lower and raise the feed dogs. Whoops I reread your post again and they are up--well I don't know what to say As for the tension--could you have disconnected the pressure foot rod from the tension somehow. I don't think this is a home repair. I have had machines apart and I simply don't know. I really don't think it would be that much to take it in and have it repaired. If it worked fine before, it is just a matter of connecting things right. Could you borrow or rent a machine to finish your dress?

I am not a sewing machine expert, but I do make a lot of quilts. Occasionally, like everyone else, my machine does what you are describing and usually a quick cleaning or re-threading fixes the problem. It is not normal for a 5-6 year old machine to be doing this so it sounds like it time for a trip to a service place. It's worth it to reduce the stress it's causing. Like the previous poster said, get an estimate so you can decide if you want to repair or replace! You said it doesn't matter if it's the top or bottom thread. Do you mean it does it with both? From a trouble shooting perspective it does matter which it is so if it's one or the other it would help to know that. Is this machine new to you or have you had it a while? Did it ever work OK or has it been doing this as long as you've had it? If you bought it used, and it's never worked for you, then this might be why the last person got rid of it! But if it used to work fine for you, then it can almost certainly be fixed. What's the model? There may be others here with similar problems. Try posting this on the quilting forum too be cause there are lots of quilters with Brother machines and they may be able to help if they know the model. Good luck!

If you have a Kenmore now and like the way it sews, then stay with the Kenmore brand. Sears is always having sales and many of their machines are made by Janome, another excellent brand of machine. The added benefit is that you can probably use the feet and accessories from the old machine with the new machine, and realize savings because you don't have to buy new feet. It seems to me you would be throwing good money away to get the Shark if it has had mixed reviews. I learned the hard way after I purchased the Singer CE200 that had mixed reviews and found I was not overly fond of the machine after I started garment sewing with it. Right now I have my Kenmore 19365 out and ready to go for a crepe blouse because I'm sick of being frustrated sewing with that stupid Singer. Singer makes excellent products, the CE100 and 200 combo embroidery and sewing machines just are one big bummer of a machine series in their product line for sewing...embroidery feature is fine. All in all, I would advise to do your homework about different types and brands of machines (internet will save you shoe leather there), try the different machines that appeal to you after doing your research until you find the one you really like and feel comfortable using, then keep saving your pennies until you have the funds to purchase that new machine. Until you have the funds, keep using the machine you have now until you can really afford to purchase an upgraded machine and upgrade our sewing skills while saving money for a new machine (you are still in the beginner phase and need to upgrade to more difficult sewing). I saved for years to get a Kenmore 19365 to replace the beloved old Lady Kenmore with blonde cabinet my mother bought me new and upgrade the Singer 6235, paid cash, and actually treasure the 19365 because I had to work so hard and long to save for that machine that sews like a dream.

This machine seems to be a basic machine that threads the way that most do. It is likely to be very much like the rest of the old machines.

By the way, that thing of top of it with the lever is used to control the amount of pressure that the feed dog puts on the fabric.

As to the value of it....probably not much.

It is as cute as it can be, though, and you would need to find those few people who would want it because of that. Sometimes finding that rare person who wants it badly enough to give you a good price for something is more trouble than it is worth.

“Worth” anything? It’s worth only what someone will pay.

If it works ok, IMO it might be worth $25 or so to someone who needs a simple machine.

Nice!

Some of the older metal machines are extremely sturdy and can sew through things they shouldn't so they are sometimes favored by people who make costumes or outdoor gear.

They still aren't worth much because there are a lot of them out there but they are still very useful (unless you want to do fancy stuff. Or computerized stuff.).

I just read this posting. Yes, the older metal machines are extremely sturdy and can sew through things that some newer ones cannot. These older metal machines are becoming rare. Ask a sewing machine repair shop for parts as some have an archive .

Why you may ask..... there is not much interest in home sewing unless you are a crafter/hobbyist or sew as 'business'. Ready made clothing and curtains for example is cheap ( slave labor, etc.)

Another point. Sewing repair people are hard to find. So in some areas of the U.S. it is 'word of mouth' and you may have to drive some distance. Some of the shops have these 'older' machines ( refurbished/restored) and cannot keep them in stock. Well working older Viking are selling for up to $500. Keep this in mind that the advertisers of the on line /cheaper sewing machines say they are "metal" - well maybe the Presser foot is...... or how about the metal rivets they use instead of adjusting screws??? Support your Sewing Machine Shop and the people who repair and sell the New and Used sewing machines.

A well running older sewing machine is worth it’s weight in gold. I would buy a machine like this before anything made in the last 10 years. Would be great for a beginner, no frustrations.
