Definitely not a rose. 'Deeply grooved, serrated leaves', which I can see from the picture are opposite on the stem, says Vibrunum to me. Can't tell which one from that picture, though. Wait till the leaves have expanded and post a bigger picture that shows a couple leaves and how they attach to the stem. (Somebody posted above about 'deeply grooved, serrated leaves' and thinks she has Doublefile Viburnum, but I don't think that's the one you've got.) WW

There really aren't many small tree-like rhododendrons for zone 5. The tallest ones hardy to at least -20F are Caractacus, -25F, Red, 7' in 10 years Spicy Nutmeg, -20F, Pink, 7' in 10 years There are quite a few that get up to 6' in 10 years. They are listed at: ARS Plant Finder One way to get tall rhododendrons is to find a mature planting in your area and move them to your place. Rhododendrons are relatively easy to move if done properly.

its tricky.. but her name says toronto ... what has grown there previously ... a good indication of light .. defining SHADE is near impossible in words .. as noted.. it can be grotto dark.. or very bright ... when it all boils down.. no one can tell you what will work in a given spot.. in your yard ... you just have to experiment ... until you find what works ... an also as noted.. you might need to be persistent .... if you insist on a specific plant ... which might lead one to not putting all your eggs in one basket.. and trying a number of different type plants ... rather than a monoculture. ... lack of light.. will rarely kill a plant .. other than grotto dark ... but it can affect vigor ... which would translate into either it being leggy or not full .... or in the case of flowering plants.. reduced flowering .. in other words ... it might not end up being like the pix you see.. of well sited plants ... good luck ken ps: btw.. a lot of plants that favor shade .. or are tolerant of shade... it can be more of a water issue ... in other words.. they prefer a respite from direct sun .. in the heat of the day.. if they can not pump enough water regarding such ...

I grow several PJMs, so I do have experience with this shrub. I honestly don’t see how you would be saving space by shoving the PJM tight into the corner since typically corners in yards don’t get used much. The current spot has the shrub constricted on two sides by the fence unlike your example, and I just don’t think it will look good as placed since the fence will be more likely to rot sooner with the moisture held against the fence by the plant’s foliage and you’ve wedged a medium sized shrub into an inadequate space. IME they may lean outward to get more light, not a look I like much either. But you can do what you want since it’s your yard.
