Neurotic fears about freezer breakdown?

Yeah, I tend to be neurotic about some things. I have a large upright non-auto defrosting Wood freezer. I guess the Wood company went out of business in 2009. I underestimated how long I've had this one and found my sales slip for it. Realized it was 21 years old. Every Spring, I defrost it. Now I'm noticing that it is making more intermittent sounds, which sound like expansion/contraction sounds. Hopefully, that's all it is. BUT.....it makes me crazy to think that it might die in the middle of winter, when it is stocked full of garden stuff.

I live out in the country, and if it were to die, it would take more than a couple days to get a new one brought out here. I guess there's no way of knowing when these things will die. What would you do in this situation? Yes, I could just buy a new one now, but other than it making these popping sounds more frequently, it's doing great.

And I'm a person to use something as long as I can. My last car was 15 years old when I traded it in, and our refrigerator is 31 years old and my washer and dryer are 42 years old!! I guess when you get as old as I am, you just try to be the one to go before your "stuff" does. haha

Just curious how you all would handle this problem........of not knowing the future of your freezer, with all your hard work inside it. Thanks!

I have an old Montgomery Ward upright freezer that I inherited from my parents. They bought it around 1988 I believe so that makes it 33 years old. Yours is just a pup cath!

I bought a 15 cu/ft chest freezer in March 2020 mainly because we were getting ready to have a couple of our cow herd processed and I couldn't fit 2/3 of a beef into my upright and have room for anything else. Like you, I was also worried that the old monkey ward freezer might give up the ghost at any time. So far it's still going strong (knocks on wood).

Do you have space for another small freezer? Prices have increased about 25% since I bought mine last year but you can still buy a 5-7 cu/ft chest freezer in the $200-$250 range. That may give you a little peace of mind as a backup.

Hi Lone Jack........LOL.....Mine is just a pup. YAY! :) Here's hoping it's a healthy pup. :)

My bigger Wood one (not made out of wood, haha). is about 5 and 1/2 tall and 2 and 3/4 wide (can't find the cf info anywhere). I didn't mention that I did buy a small 5.8 cf freezer to squeeze into our utility room. It's full now too! It's only about 2-3 years old. I think it will slowly get better, since I'm learning not to always feel like I need more than I really do need. (But you know how that goes. Once I quit doing that, something bad will happen and I'll run out. haha.......see, I AM neurotic. ;) )

I had thought of buying just a back-up freezer, but I was looking at a big one, but you reminded me I could get a smaller one for an emergency, and that would help a lot if this one died.....at least if it took awhile to get a new bigger one delivered. Not sure where I'd store it though......no garage. We do have a tiny basement and just last week DH and DS hauled up a HUGE old fridge from the basement and we swore we'd never keep one down there again, but a small freezer would be do-able. Or we could keep it in the living room, dining room, bathroom, etc., haha

Anything to save frozen garden stuff!

Sorry for the ramble. But the smaller back-up-plan-freezer is definitely a possibility. Thanks for reminding me of the smaller ones!

Here's the thing. our civilization produces an awful lot of crap that has to be disposed of. When it is concentrated in landfills, normal biological processes cannot break down harmful chemicals for a variety of reasons, inadequate heat and oxygen leading the list. Very often chemicals cannot break down when brought into the home as well, such as organiphosphates which are processed pretty well in low concentrations outside. (I realize some of you will debate this but I'm not interested in that tired contraversy right now.) Using a little carpet as mulch seems to be an ideal way of dealing with one form of waste. Everything leaches chemicals but I think it is counterproductive to be excessively conservative. The concern about produce near a highway doesn't have anything to do with ground pollution but with direct contact of chemicals in the air attaching to leaves and fruit. Plants do not pull everthing in the ground into their systems and if carpet does not create a huge health risk in someones home where they are breathing in its fibers and absorbing its chemicals through their skin how could it pose a significant risk as a mulch? It is possible I suppose but not likely enough to advise against it in my opinion. Someone can google the issue of whether plants selectively absorb lead through their roots if they like, but it's something I haven't heard about. The danger of industrial pollution is not how it kills us one at a time- individuals are living longer than they ever have. The danger of industrial pollution is that it is altering the entire planet in ways that threaten the existence of our entire species. This is a fact that the organic agriculture movement seems to overlook. When the oceans themselves are dying, mostly from chemicals unrelated to agriculture, eating organic brocolli doesn't do a whole lot of good.

Shellva, I just found this thread and after seeing the photo of your "sick" tomato of a couple years ago scanned down through to see if you reported on the results of your soil test. To my eye that tomato showed nutrient deficencies. There seemed to be a purplish cast to the stem--not enough phosphorous maybe. The growing tip was pale green--not enough nitrogen. The dried leaf margin so early in the season may have been a potassium lack. And those cupped leaves are indicative of a nutrient lack too but I don't remember what. And as some have said, pH is critical. Here in eastern Okla our soils are too acid to grow many crops well, beans and peas especially, also asparagus. So we amend our soils with woodashes as well as lots of organic stuff. And I am in total agreement with those who say it takes 3-5 years to get good results. Aeration is also critical. Our first garden at this location--on heavy clay--was built by hand, because we didn't own a tiller. My husband and I turned the soil with shovels, our two oldest children beat it up with rakes and hoes. That was 24 years ago. Then we got a soil test and for a couple years used a bit of chemical fertilizer while we built up the soil. Have been organic now for 20 years. We still till twice a year--the garden is 5000 sq ft, too big not to, although we tried one year. Once in the late fall we turn under the chickenmanure/woodchip litter from the chicken house and again in late winter we have to till to get rid of the darn winter weeds. We don't till to "cultivate", but use a hoe early in the season. Then we mulch with oak leaves that have decomposed some over the winter and grass clippings and rotten sawdust from a sawmill when we can get it. And we provide veggies for 4 familes all summer and a good part of the winter. So I hope you come back and let us know what that soil test showed. It is a very handy tool to use. Knowledge is power. It is also very handy to study the photos of nutrient deficiency in plants. Wish I could remember the name of the book that I first saw them in but I gave the thing away to a neophyte gardener. Maybe someone knows of a link that shows them. I would like to refresh my memory.

I am having the same issue: I never use ice, and I hate the through-the-door ice and water dispensers because they negate the whole best thing about French door refrigerators, the fact that the storage most often used is at eye-level. Plus I find them ugly. Three strikes, you’re out! EXCEPT: thanks to the pandemic and the subsequent shortages and trucking delays, the only refrigerators available as French door models mostly have through-the-door options. I bought one, a Frigidaire Gallery, and I love the design, the lighting, and the fact that the freezer second inner drawer has it’s own metal drawer glides, and not sitting on top of the freezer door’s plastic sides. However, the left side of the fridge compartment has about 1/3 of the space wasted by the ice and water through-the-door unit. My previous Samsung at another house was great, and no through the door feature, just a small discreet interior water dispenser and ice maker in the freezer’s top drawer (with separate metal drawer glides), and I never hooked the water lines up. However, after 13 years it died, and the next Samsung I bought did NOT have the durable second drawer glides for the freezer interior drawer, and although I have not had too many issues with it, those inner drawers that sit on the bottom freezer’s plastic are famous for going off the tracks. So, because of this quality feature of separate drawer glides in the freezer, and the fact that it was on sale, I decided to get the through-the-door Frigidaire gallery fridge. I did not hook up the water line, and now, the fridge is going to be returned 29 days after it was purchased!!! (Lowes gives you 30 days to return from purchase date, NOT delivery date and it must be in their store by that 30 days, not just return requested!) Why am I returning it? Because every couple of hours the refrigerator makes an enormously loud buzzing noise that wakes me up at 4 am and jolts me several other times throughout the day… Why! Because the ice maker (that I don’t want) is calling for water! I don’t want to hook it up, but if it is going to make THAT much racket, I can’t keep it. I have no idea if the noise would stop if it was hooked up, or if this unit is defective, and I don’t know whether to replace it with the same refrigerator, now no longer on sale but I would be exchanging it, or get the Samsung without the nice freezer drawer hardware, or take a chance on the LG with the see-through right-hand door. There are ONLY three choices available in store now without a through-the-door feature, the last is a Hisense, which, although I LOVE the styling, has a reputation for uneven temperatures in the freezer… which is very unhealthy! So, Samsung with junky drawer, LG which costs $700 more and although it has that funky-cool glass door with the easy reach, I don’t know about their reliability, or replace the fridge with the last remaining same model available in the store right now. The Frigidaire does have beautiful lighting, but crap shelves, the LG shelves are okay, in the Samsung they really cheaped out on the interior shelves now, much less nice than even my replacement Samsung at my other house. Lazypup thank you so much for sharing your story. So many people misunderstand what mental illness can do to people and those that live with them. My DH was diagnosed with BPD in the last decade. If only he had been diagnosed earlier how different our life might have been, especially financially. He has always been high functioning and a hard worker blah blah blah so it was easy to dismiss the erratic behavior. I can relate to the job walk-offs. One year he had nine different 1099s. He is stablized with a couple drugs that are pretty side effect free for him also. One of the "lucky" ones who hasn't needed lithium. It will never be perfect but it is so much better than before. I also agree with you on the over diagnosing that goes on with children. It is the boys that have it worse since the feminization of our society expects them to have the same behavioral characteristics that girls do. Our children's childhoods are being stolen. They are expected to learn more at an earlier age,have a lengthened school day with less recess,not given opportunity to blow off steam and burn off that excess energy and have every minute of their waking hours micro-managed. Yet at the same time many are still drinking out of those stupid sippy cups and being pushed around in strollers at age 5.

Jack, my daughter has an old Kenmore that I passed down to her when she got her own place. I bought that one in 1984 and it's still freezing, but one of these days I know it'll give up the ghost.

Cath, I agree with jack, buy a small one for a back up. Then try not to fill it up unless you need it, LOL, but I guarantee that you will. (grin)

I did have a 5 day power outage several years ago, and I had beef in the freezer and no generator. I lit my gas stove top with a match and started canning beef. (sigh) I live in Michigan and if it had been winter I'd have been all right, packed it up in coolers or stuffed it into a snow bank but no, it had to be the end of May. I managed to save a lot of the beef, and I gave the rest away to neighbors who were mostly cooking on grills. It worked, but was not optimal.

Now we have a generator and since we just had a power outage last week that lasted for three days, it earned its keep. My beef/pork/venison/chicken/produce are all still solidly frozen, thank goodness. Since I have four freezers, I'd never be able to can my way through that now!

Some info on freezers. Mine was dying last fall and when I went to buy a new one, it was impossible; I lost pretty much everything. I also found out that new freezers cannot be put in an unheated building (mine was in the barn) unless they are rated "garage ready." Standard freezers are now so cheaply made that they won't run if temps drop below freezing.
