Comments (45)Remember what I was just saying yesterday???? Crazy. Well, I had a question early on today, so googled the subject followed by okie dawn. My memory is shot! What was it! Well the main point was that a GW post by okie dawn popped up, and I read her long discussion on it--oh I know--it was on easiest vegetables to grow. But then when I checked in on FB, there, front and center, was the notice that today is her birthday. And so I shed tears. How lucky were all of us who benefitted from her kindness and knowledge. I am so thankful for finding her--and all of you. Oh my gosh. . . as I was thinking of her yesterday and today. . .worked so hard in the house AND in the yard. I wanted the deck and yard to look nice for the trail of people who were going to be passing through tomorrow. Getting the lawn mowed proved to be quite the challenge since it has been rainy all week. Since it runs off our yard except toward the back corners, I found a 3-hr window of slightly windy and no rain yesterday and slammed out the enormous ex-driveway and immediate back yard. GDW took pity and asked if I wanted some help in the immediate, and I said, "PLEASE!" I hardly ever accept his help. But was grateful for it yesterday. Then, we had another break of about 3 hours today! And I told him I thought I could slam out the small front yard. Meanwhile, he was weed-eating. I was thinking about Dawn then, too. She never gave a clue that she was in pain or having trouble. But she HAD to be, I would think. And so thinking about that enabled me to get a lot of work done today. Cleaning bathrooms, finishing cleaning on the deck, vacuuming part of the living room, cleaning out the fridge, mowing the front lawn, doing a couple loads of wash. Then a note from our friends at the marina saying they were going to cancel the poker run tomorrow and move it to June 5. I laughed SOOOOOOO hard! Perfect! Got all our deck and house stuff caught up. We get to clean again a bit the week before June 5, but meanwhile, we get to enjoy how spiffy the deck looks. I have a lot of containers and a lot of BIG containers outside--something like a dozen or so. None are native plants. Several are ornamental peppers and/or lettuce/kale/chard. But though I'd like to have a professional container planter person come do these for me, still doesn't look too bad.. Just got a several more sweet potato slips from SESE that I'll have to get to the school tomorrow (except it's supposed to rain all day), or maybe Sunday. Still have a FEW peppers to plant somewhere. I guess here and at school. Well, love to you all. Later....See MoreJuly 2021 week 3
Comments (42)Jen, I haven't been out to the kitchen garden in a couple of days. Maybe the caterpillars are still there. I'm hoping to have time to water everything tomorrow evening and look over it all. I did see a beautiful black swallowtail on Thursday. It was interested in the scarlet sage, but when I went out to observe it, it left. We got M & M all moved in. I fixed up a "first breakfast in your new home" housewarming basket: my homemade blackberry jelly, english muffins, our eggs, some turkey bacon, juice, and some treats for their "boys". They have two dogs that are their children: Nico and Milo. I hope they enjoy their breakfast tomorrow. Stella comes in tomorrow afternoon. I'll just be getting in from work. I didn't get the house completely "prepared" but it looks and feels mostly good. Pet issues continue. You know how everyone says declawed cats have behavioral problems and how cruel and horrible their lives are if they get declawed? In the past (before I learned it was cruel), my kittens were always declawed. Not one of them had a behavioral problem. They could climb fences, trees, even houses. They were happy. Didn't have food issues or litterbox issues. My current cats all have their claws. They have behavioral problems. One of my momma hens was attacked by another momma hen. Blossom's eye is swollen and her face looks horrible. Her baby slipped into Stormy's side of the kennel. Blossom went over the barrier to get her baby. I found them fighting. Both chicks are fine. Blossom and her baby are back in the chick brooder so that Blossom's face can be kept clean. Blossom's baby is the one who had the torn "armpit" earlier. I think B is better today. I brought her in yesterday and today to treat her face and give her yogurt--probiotics, protein and calcium. I've really messed up this year with hen/chick "apartments". I have plans for a broody hen/chick apartment complex. I would like 6 (3 on one side and 3 on the other) broody boxes with removeable lids. Each box would have an attached small pen done right with proper hardware cloth. Although, next year I'm not planning on doing so many broody hens. I have a feeling it's because I let the first ones go so long and others jumped on the bandwagon. The two broody hens were moved to the extra dog kennel today. They hated it. It's not completely secure so they were put back into the main coop tonight to sleep. They immediately jumped off the roost bar and went to their nests. No eggs, though. I guess, we'll continue this until hopefully they give up. The temperature makes me cranky. All coops/brooders have fans. Tomorrow starts a new week....See MoreAugust 2021 Week 5?
Comments (38)For those of you whose yards and gardens have been decimated by grasshoppers (like mine have been), George posted this on FB. Hilarious. Great fun--I can see we're going to have to buy the proper game equipments. https://seedsavingnetwork.proboards.com/thread/586/grasshoppers?fbclid=IwAR1S4tBw3TEJeqPiPkrbTHu_T7iNB7LfT4JtTN8ZnAlvhWc7L-WRYgS_uFY I feel like I've been duped. I thought hip surgery was supposed to make one feel good as new. Apparently not. Good as new if you do this and this and don't do that or that. Amy helped clue me in. Doctor conned me. (Not that I have any options--he was just trying to paint it in the rosiest light.) Still like the doctor and would recommend him to anyone with knee or hip problems. Maybe shoulder, too. Crazy snake gourds. By the time they turn red they're no good to anyone, unless someone can think of a cool use for them. We can't, but the kids sure liked seeing them....See MoreDec. 12 2021, week 3
Comments (62)Lost my first post. The Chinese characters are grayed out today. Margaret's was good. I love the goulash. Ron did not care for the special, beef rouladen. He said it wasn't bad, just not memorable. But we brought home the jeager snitzle (I'm not sure of spelling). It is breaded pork cutlet with mushroom gravy. The new owner is Polish. Don't know how the menu will change. It started to rain as soon as we got on the highway to Tulsa. I hate the highways anyway, let alone while raining. Larry, I hope you feel better! You too Danny! And Kim. Dang y'all, there's not enough of us for all this illness. Nancy, the birds sound like geese. Snow geese would be white. White pelicans have black under their wings. Sandhill cranes...there were a bunch at the Great Salt Plains, but most have moved south. H/J, spring pictures appreciated. I need to go, Ron is fidgeting....See Moredbarron
