how are these lines in penny tile installation?

Our floor tile installation in the bath remodel started today. Not grouted yet. What do you think?
We’re using Prism grout and I selected Cape Gray color which is a slightly lighter grout. To minimize grid lines should I try to match the tile color as closely as possible? See photos and excuse the construction lighting.

I suggest you get an installer who is very experienced with penny tile installation. I have read numerous discussions in Houzz on penny tile and so many were disappointed with the installation of their penny tile due to unevenness of the grout / grid lines.

As you can tell, this is a redo. Please find out what type of experience your installed (I hesitate to use the title "tile installer") has with these types of sheets. Did s/he realize that each sheet will have to be trimmed and laid out before they are installed? Dis his/her quote include the extra 10-15% more TIME it takes to deal with these types of tiles? Did you discuss the final look (ie. you should never be able to tell these are laid in sheets)? And did you discuss the "flatness" of the surface that is required for these types of tiles? Most of this is the tile install itself, but a small (yet visually significant) portion is the surface it is sitting on. Some of this is probably being made worse because the wall it was being applied to did not have enough prep. What type of "prep" was stipulated/paid for in the quote?

I think you received your answer in your previous post. In our world, this is called a tile fail. It was not installed properly as the sheets have to be staggered and occasionally cut to interlock so the grid lines are not visible. If this is only on the bath wall, and not in the shower, you can disregard the comments by others in your previous post regarding waterproofing. It sounds like your contractor is willing to re-do it and that is the correct approach. What you need is assurance that it will be installed correctly (by someone who knows what they are doing) the next time, and it shouldn't be on "your dime" as the first install was not done professionally. I see you are looking for a response tonight. It‘s a good thing you noticed this now and are willing to take action. I am not a pro but I will tell you that if you aren’t happy now, you won’t be happy later. Cut your losses. Don’t throw good money after bad. Rip it out. Then do a search on this site for penny tiles or penny rounds and see how many unhappy people are out there as a result of a poor installation. Either get an expert in or change to a more forgiving material. And no. From what I’ve seen on this site, grout will not cover the sins of a bad install. Sorry if I sound harsh. It looks like your installer did a good job with the penny tile, but yes try and match the grout to the tile. There will almost always be some lines that show.

This looks pretty good, though I am no expert. The lines I am seeing I think may just be the lines of the material under the tile and may not show up with grouting.

Hi friends, believe me I read the horror stories about penny tile before going forth with the purchase… and spoke with our contractor and the tile lead to express concern in advance. I felt confident we were on same page. They did a good job with the shower floor which was done with the penny tile s couple weeks ago so I felt settled. Then after a busy day running around with our kids yesterday came home to see the installation of the full floor wasn’t quite as perfect 😕 I’m definitely going to go with a darker grout to match it, but should I bring it up to the GC and see what he thinks before we grout?

They obviously didn’t stagger the sheets. It appears they worked very carefully which I respect and appreciate but I’m seeing grid lines….
