Any idea what plant this large leaf comes from? From Hawaii??
Comments (2)Thanks bboy (sorry but for some reason I didn't get the response via my email and just found your data). I looked this up but the missing section (and somewhat heart shape rather than just round) makes me think it's something else. I keep looking at water lily leaves to no avail. Someone gave me this thing so I've been curious ever since. Any other ideas? Even other categories to look under? I've googled images for "large tropical leaf" and "water lily leaf," "lotus leaf" etc......See Morepest damage to trees - any ideas what is doing it?
Comments (5)i had one that stumped me for years.. someone finally walked thru.. and said it was cat .. go figure on that.. its finer than yours .. i have had a couple buck rubs.. it bigger than your damage a south facing could be a form of winter sunscald .. that side of the tree thaws in mid winter. and a scar develops ... if they were larger transplants .. it very well could be nursery damage.. either at field digging.. shipping. transporting to your house... etc.. i swear.. it can take a year or two for the injury to actually 'show' ... could be kids .. but we are talking baseball bat attacks ... all over the yard.. it would have to be a real hoodlum to go at them like this.. nothing younger than a teenager ... possible??? the deep scratching could have been raccoon ... or you.. lol .. you know.. when it all boil down.. trees heal themselves.. its called compartmentalization ... the borers are the only issue .. grubs are not a tree thingee ... others can talk about that .. but basically.. solve that ... and then quit picking at them .... and leave them alone.. an do their own thing.. i have had dozens.. if not a hundred ... of these mysteries over the years.. its a good topic to waste some beer on.. but you are never going to get a definitive answer.. IMHO ... a they say.. stuff happens ... life aint no disney movie ... ken...See MoreCitrus Bark Damage any Ideas?
Comments (1)It is difficult to know the size of your satsuma from the photo, but this looks like long-term damage, not just from this winter. Frost damage does cause bark splitting, but you would first see die-back of smaller twigs and tender leaves. This damage is due to some kind of fungal rot, possibly initially caused by some physical damage or because of too damp conditions allowing attack by the phytophthora fungus. There appears to be a patch of white goo which could be fungus - clean this away. If this rot encircles the whole trunk then your tree is dead. What does the other side look like? There is a product called Aliette which can stop phytophthera rot but may not be available in your area of USA. I would brush as much of of the growing mix away from the trunk and ensure that the area is kept dry. Keep water away from the trunk and perhaps reduce watering frequency....See MoreAny idea what these are? (Under a rose leaf.)
Comments (3)Uhoh! Run for your life. Those are the brand new nymphs of the dreaded Brown Marmorated Stinkbug. Search long and hard for any others and dispose of in a jar of soapy water. These have become THE most common pest in recent years. If I were you, I'd become very familiar with their appearance in all stages of life. They look different every time they shed their exoskeleton. You don't want to mistake one of the beneficials by mistake. Getting rid of the nymphs, before they have a change to develop wings, is important....See MoreTravis in PHX (9b)
