Cash bar tacky for a 50th birthday party?
Comments (85)I just attended a 25th anniversary and it was great... my younger cousin (20) hosted the event in honor of her parents (my aunt and uncle). Now keep in mind she is a full time university student paying her own tuition on a small budget. Because she was on a very tight budget she decided that she would have an open bar (which is fine by me as I am there to celebrate the 25 wonderful years that my aunt and uncle have shared.) Secondly she decided she would have everyone pay for their own meal... this is how she worked it out... she asked for $35 from each guest... $20 to go towards the meal, which was very good... and the remaining $15 from each guest was pooled together and given as one gift from the entire family to be put towards my aunt and uncles trip to Hawaii. I know it seems we paid for everything... but that is not the case... I think people sometimes overlook the other hosting details that add up... such as the venue, decorations, favors, cake, centre pieces and etc. She also hired a photographer, which I think is more important paying for than the bar... the photos are lifetime memories that will help remind our entire family of the amazing time we had that day/night. I am happy she kept my aunt and uncle in mind that day... it was there day and if that meant I had to spent a little bit of my money to make sure it was everything they dreamed, then so be it I LOVE MY FAMILY. I almost forgot... we raised $1800 toward their trip to Hawaii. Pretty good, eh! (Yes I'm Canadian.) Think about it! If I had to go out and get a card that's $5... gift wrap and bows $10-$15... a gift is approx. $50 or more if you want something worth buying... this would have added up to a lot more money. So basically I saved... I paid $35, $20 to my meal, $15 toward the Hawaii pool and approx. $12 on drinks the wine was free and set on the tables. So if you do the math based on buying a gift at $50 and the card and bow at $15... I saved $23, WOW! Sure she could have left the bar out all together, but I think it's best she gave her guests the option to have a few casual drinks or not. I mean really what does it really cost for a few good casual drinks approx. $15. Just my opinion! Have a good day!...See Morepainting a barrel tile roof--ridiculous? tacky?
Comments (12)Hi DM! I did a search and came up with these: "Before slapping paint on a tile roof, why not contact someone who can clean them?Often times a no pressure cleaning method is alll that is neeeded to give a roof that refreshed look." "If in fact you are speaking of a true clay tile, and re-coloring is required, then contact the manufacturer for advice. Ludowici comes to mind, which I believe is a subsidiary company of Certainteed. If it is the more commonly installed tile material, concrete tile, then a concrete/cement "Stain" would be preferable. Once again, if you can determine the manufacturer, then contact them. Also, if you do find out who the manufacturer is, check and see what their warranty coverage, if any, is for coloration defects. They may be responsible for the re-coating of the materials for you. Even if it is just a fungi type growth, you should still contact the manufacturer or a concrete/cement or clay manufacturer to see what types of cleaning agents may be used without adding to further color aesthetic concerns." Since I'm sure you'd have to have it cleaned before you paint it, I think I'd start there and see how it looks once cleaned....See MoreFSBO Questions
Comments (19)Okay, from what I've seen, read, and observed this is why people claim Open Houses don't work. In a "normal" Open House, a Realtor is there for two hours. And, in many cases, we've noticed, the more astute ones probe you for what you're looking for because this is an opportunity to send you to another one of their listings if this particular one isn't right. And that's just good salemanship. However, two hours on a weekend is not enough to get maximum exposure. That's why I recommend you consider your price as a FSBO, very carefully-- be sure that buyers know that they also "get a piece of the deal", which, if they've done their homework, they will know it immediately when they see your online listing. The idea is to host the Open House from 10:00 am - 6:00pm, Saturday and Sunday at a price you feel people will jump on. We sold three homes this way, all in less than 10 days. We had multiple bids on all three homes, which drove the price up. Because we priced well, when we held our Open Houses, potential buyers saw many other potential buyers interested in our home, which enhanced our home's perceived desirability. We had to schedule almost no private showings because our buyers came back multiple times within the weekend. Every buyer we had originated at our Open House. Pricing is key and it's not a strategy that would necessarily work well in a rural area where you may need more time to sell. The key is to price well to get attention, have your home accessible for a solid weekend (and a few times we let people in early or stay late for the Open House), take advantage of the first impression that a well maintained, clean, decluttered, desirable home makes on the market. You need to be priced better and look better than your comps. If you marketed well, the price break you give for not paying a Realtor will be bumped up by buyers competing with other buyers. That's what our experience has been....See MoreFaux stone--tacky or nice?
Comments (31)"The cost and installation of real stone was about the same as faux stone - not a hard decision to go with real stone." Most people (who have an interest in their homes) would prefer real stone, real metal, real shutters, real wood siding, authentic beautiful materials... It's usually a cost or maintenance consideration. So, what is the advantage to using a faux stone? If it's not a financial or a structural consideration due to weight, why are you considering it? You do have to be careful a structure can handle the weight of real stone, even with a stone tile floor. It's weight also makes it more difficult to move and work with. Cutting would be another issue. These things usually entail higher labor charges. I would think specialized labor and equipment would be involved. Those were things I was told when I was looking at products. Be sure to get the full picture at the outset, not just a material cost comparison, to avoid surprises. Some of the faux stones are more real looking than others. The craftsmanship of the installer will also affect how "real" or good it looks. Then again, some real stone doesn't look so hot either! If what you pick isn't indigenous to the region, it could look off. Or it can be installed without a lot of artisan skill. I've seen some real stones that just look ugly to me. If this is a big box product, beware of quality, and it probably does not look that much like real stone. "but I was actually looking for opinions on the "look." The inspiration picture in the kitchen that you posted (and the others shown) look very heavy and out of place. They don't work well, imo. If you want to bring some stone indoors, maybe a fireplace or fireplace wall would be another option to consider....See MoreCA Kate z9
