Painting a textured wall red?
Comments (13)I am so stuck on the red, gold and black color combo that is taken from the plates and picture I have on my wall. Maybe I should scrap everything and find some new accessories and just start over. I am at this point. I think DH would kill me. You'd think that starting with a neutral pallete (white, tans, etc. ) would make it easier but I am having such a hard time with this. Oh gosh, sorry you're having a hard time. It is funny how sometimes it's easier than others. I have a theory about that. Promise to keep it short. The pulling colors from inspiration pieces is overrated. It's been about a zillion years now since I've been saying that. :D Mood boards and all that other typical design stuff is overrated too. But, when people pay good money for a design or decorating certificate of some sort, they need to be able to produce something tangible. I think that's why the staid beliefs about color continue on and on and on. The most important and relevant things about color can't be glue-gunned to a piece of foamcore or even held in a hand. So few people understand what that means. So few are willing to let go of the conventional, open their eyes and SEE what it means. I have little hope for most of them. Glue gun firmly in hand, they're gonna die on that design hill built up of old color philosophies and methods. Who can blame them, really. On many levels those old methodologies are easy and they work -- and they work for a whole lotta people. It gets interesting, really interesting, when those old methods are tried and fail miserably or are simply outgrown. When what is wanted from color, what is needed from color, what is dreamed of in color is bigger than an inspiration piece, what are you suppose to do? Where do you look? For corn's sake everything out there says that you need a rug, a plate, a fabric or something to help guide you to a well-coordinated room! I mean, look at all the famous designers! Oh please, as if. As if what they do matters to personal color expectations and tolerances. People believe that stuff and take it all the way to the paint store with 'em. It's hilarious and deeply saddening all at the same time. Authentic color resides in a place that can't be merchandised. It's within reach to all of us. Be in the space you want to color and think about what it is you really want and intend for that space. Putting down the plate, setting aside the picture could very well be a good restarting point for you....See MoreLooking for paint color for my kitchen
Comments (4)Since you are dealing with blue you could go two ways depending on your taste. Grays would be more modern--something like Benjamin Moore wickham gray. A more country feel would be a yellow--which is opposite the color wheel I think. I am just not sure if i like yellow with oak....See MoreI would like to paint my cabinets. Options and advice :)
Comments (22)Yes - those are not oak and possibly not even solid wood - they may have a veneer so don't sand too hard. The Zinsser products actually say no sanding is necessary, and I did not on my laundry room cabinets as there was very little gloss to start with. The primers do need time to cure - you can still paint over them, but handle the doors carefully for about a week. Do remove the doors and all hardware before painting. Sometimes the drawer fronts are removable from the drawer box. Have a good area to paint. Cabinet Coat is the top coat I believe - the Zinsser is the primer. Zinser 123 is latex so water clean up. The BIN is I think mineral spirits clean up. It is great for really glossy surfaces, but you may be able to get away with the 123 for easier clean up. I've been perfectly happy with the 123. I have not used the Cabinet Coat. I use a latex acrylic enamel recommended by my local paint store. Get brushes that are appropriate for the paint. I recommend that you take a cabinet door or drawer down to your local reputable paint store and have them help you gather the products. They may have different top coats - most of the name brand paints now have a cabinet paint. If it is a good brand, it should do fine....See MoreColor for my front door
Comments (21)mimimomy, When we build our Ryan Home, our HOA standards were all brick fronts...then, of course, Ryan left and the custom builders came in and didn't abide by the guidelines (which no one actually enforces anyway!)- and now there are all these beautiful modern homes with both siding and brick or stone fronts. I never thought of adding siding to the front of the house, I like that blue but not sure it would go with my other siding (which I also don't like) which is like a cream color. :( I think for now I am interested in updating the door and possibly trim color, and porch and go from there! I love the idea of updating the lights too and want to add landscaping lights once I figure out what I want! I also like the idea of updating the hardward on the door. I am not sure how I would go about adding rectangular glass to the front door, (something a general contractor would do?) but I do like the idea- depending on the price!...See MoreJeanne Cardwell
