Yeah, it was admittedly kind of tough to find examples of foyers with large-scale lights repeating down the length of the room. Nevertheless, especially with the very "airy" look of the chandelier you have in mind and how far away each of them will be from one another, I think you should be OK to use two to make a big statement!

I agree...but it got worse. The people who remodeled this house took some interesting approaches - to include leaving that fan with no switch (it runs off of a remote control) and wiring it before the drywall was in...so we can't access the wires to change that. In other words, it can't go in the alcove. I switched gears completely. I am redoing the guest bedroom as a parlor/family room and going all out - velvet chairs, silk curtains to the ceiling, and floor to ceiling books on one wall. They are hanging the light in there as we speak. It is too big for the space...but centered over the coffee table that goes in the center. It is either going to be crazy dramatic or a hot mess - but I risked it and figure worst case I can take it down.

vicwilson- Love your room and your current furniture. The chandelier your designer suggested is overwrought. You are too young and hip for that. I also don't care for chandeliers that look like a drum cylinder with dangles hanging down. They uncomfortably remind me of jellyfish. Why not peruse these vendors of light fixtures that sell upscale products? (I have no connection with them.) No cliches, no sputnik, no bubbles, no atoms. You may or may not want LCD, just don't select an LCD that looks like it belongs in an office. Good and bad news about the chandelier. Apparently those original pictures in which the arms seemed to be gilt coated were hastily taken or in poor lighting. It is clearly brass. But, there is another small spot of damage in the gilt leafing in the column that I did not know about. :-( From my research a chandelier in this style in good repair (if you don't get lucky at auction and scoop it up for a bargain), would be between $900 mimimum and $2200. Even at auction, $350, and that was a few years ago. From my research on Worthpoint, 1st Dibs and other Internet sales, they come up infrequently; a handful per every half decade. Such a big purchase. It doesn't have to be the last chandelier I ever buy, but I tend to treat purchases like that, and want to be a good steward of family wealth. Sometimes compromise is wise, sometimes it is not. Hm.
