2 years agoYes, if the end is starting to turn brown, snip the brown part off and let it dry for a week, then try again. I would encourage you to try putting some of them in soil. It's unusual for Jade to be propagated in water. I have done it, but there doesn't seem to be any advantage of trying to start them in water instead of soil. Your plan to propagate and share is great, I hope it goes well!
If any leaves get bumped off of the plant, save them and put them in a bright spot to see if they start to form baby plants too.

Comments (7)Rennet, your jades are beautiful. Kudos. And I woke up this morning to find that my largest cutting has rooted. At least I think it's rooted, I'm going off the fact that its leaves are full again and when I lightly pinch them, they are no longer thin and flimsy. I have a lot of friends who like jades and I've been wanting to gift them for a while. Awesome. I'm off to take pictures of my jades. I must have about 20 different types of plants and I can honestly say that the jades are my favorites. Comments (13)Yes, we (at least the oldies) were told to use rocks on the bottom. My mother did that too, and so did I. I think it all started with the idea of putting a piece/shard of broken pot over the drainage hole not to improve drainage but to stop soil washing out. And, sometimes, large rocks are added to the pot to weigh it down. To stop mix from washing out, a piece of mosquito screening (my favored) is very practical to use. Or mesh-type tape used for mudding drywall. There is also 'plastic canvass' available in craft stores that will work well. Or even coffee filter, or a piece of newspaper (these will eventually degrade). But to improve drainage, the soil needs to be grainy. Fine particulates of soil will fill space between the larger ones and eventually, the whole purpose is defeated. Preference of the plant (not the preference of the grower) is to have good drainage and good aeration, so the roots could also breathe. And not to be surrounded by wet soil - that happens with very fine soils that take ages to dry out. There are many instructions on the containers/packaging that may not be best for the plant. And same with info available on the net, which is, at times, totally incorrect. So, one can't be blamed... To grow succulents, it is better to get a potting mix that contains grit (not rocks - grit should be size of similar to aquarium gravel), perlite, turface, scoria, pumice - few of these ingredients mixed together will make a very good mix. Comments (4)I think some of us would be interested in your results, but it's not something that every gardener has tried. I've read about propagating different types of trees from truncheons. I've never heard of propagating a crApe myrtle that way, although I wouldn't be surprised if it worked. After all, a truncheon is just a large cutting (although there are some pluses and minuses compared to smaller cuttings). I am wondering why you used the glue. Sealing the cut is often useful for storing cuttings in relatively dry environments, but here your growing media should have enough moisture to prevent desiccation. I'm also wondering if removing most of the leaves was a good idea. After all, one of the big advantages of truncheons is that they are supposed to have more stored energy and moisture to push though the time before roots develop. More leaves would mean more food production for growing roots. I do not know whether it would be better to keep the leaves or not, I am just wondering about the rational for removing them.
