Feedback on new construction exterior colors

Soon it’ll be time to order roofing, windows, and exterior doors for our new build so I’m looking to get all the colors locked down now. Would love to tap into the collective expertise here on Houzz.

Photo shows my best shot so far. Elevation is overlaid on the actual lot. We’re in the PNW and the house will face west. Lot is wooded and view is to the rear (overlooks forested bank dropping to stream below).

Would love to hear suggestions for improvement. All colors shown here are Sherwin Williams:

Body 7061 Night Owl
Trim 9166 Drift of Mist
Accent 6072 Versatile Gray (placeholder — I’d like to go with stained wood here)
Door 7624 Slate Tile

I used 7660 Earl Grey for the roof, but I don’t know…would darker look better (more contrast?)?

Also, what color of windows would you use? I’ve been leaning towards black but am totally open to suggestions here.

It would be helpful to know what materials you are using and where.

You are already under construction?

It's also difficult to understand the house looking at an elevation.

A 3D rendering or floor plan would help.

Construction hasn’t started yet, excavation to begin second week of September. Our GC has suggested Hardie siding. I just came across Woodtone and will consider that for accent shakes and posts. Adding the floor plan. Thanks for taking a look!

Or another alternative if you are dead set on installing a gas rangetop is a plug in portable induction unit. This would allow you to pull it out when making pasta or hosting parties. These won't have the performance of a built in unit, but an option. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Portable+induction+ If I was buying one, I would splurge on a hospitality grade one. MIL has the 48 inch Wolf Rangetop with integrated griddle that runs on propane. I honestly prefer the cooking performance of my Bluestar I have the Electrolux Wave Touch ovens. Do I use half the buttons, no, but it's an amazing oven and I'm really happy with it fwiw. But, if you like the other Kitchen Aid appliances you may be able to purchase a suite and receive a discount. So, the KA oven may be better for you. These guys aren't joking on venting. I was shocked when remodeling to learn how much vents cost. There is a laundry forum, you may get more feedback on the whirlpool machines there. HTH

Wood, and sawn lumber are plentiful in North American, and have been used to frame and finish houses for hundreds of years. Cheaper and quicker than masonry walls. As for the number of exterior finish materials, until 50 years or so ago, common sense reigned and it was common for only 1-2 major exterior finish materials. Houses looked unified and were enjoyable to see when walking or driving through residential neighborhoods. Thereafter, America came under the Giant Housing Blight where builders started using as many exterior materials as possible on the front elevation of houses, and resorted to the cheapest possible material for the sides and rear elevation of the houses. Houses took on bizarre shapes and forms with no reason or purpose. Small children started disappearing and strange lights and noises were seen and heard at night. No one knows where this Blight came from nor why it happened, but it seemed to engulf large geographical areas. People entered these abominations, with all their belongings, and were never seen again. My advice to you is forget vacationing in America and go to Italy where the views and wine are better...

New Construction - Wood to Tile Transition - I Need Feedback

I did my wood to tile transition without strips (in order to make my place more handicap-friendly.) They just have to make the top surface of the tile and the top surface of the wood be the same height, I think I have about 1/8th inch difference at most between kitchen and living space, no difference between hallway and bath, and 1/8th difference at most between master and master bath. Back at my old home, I had a transistion strip between the dining area and the kitchen - it made it horrible to move from the linoleum of the kitchen back out to the wood of the dining area when I had a broken ankle and was on wheels. Plus the strips really do look ugly. (PS< the wood transition strips look fine, but mine were metal strips... but neither are necessary.) Others have pointed out you can have hardwood throughout, I just simply didn't want to do that. (Actually, my wood floors are broad beam pine, which is soft, anyway.) My build is semi-open, so I had the option in the kitchen to do tile, and so I did.

There's no such thing as truly free advice. If you post here, you "pay" by having to have a thick skin, not having control of where comments go, not having control of how they're delivered, and having to wade through conflicting and bad advice to get to a few gems. That said, you're not paying actual dollars and you're getting professional and high-level amateur feedback, so I'm of the view that you shouldn't complain about the "price." (Idioms about gift horses and mouths and free lunches come to mind). Ignore the irrelevant, wrong, and insensitively delivered advice if you like, take what's of value, and be glad this forum exists. Or at least that's what I remind myself. When I've posted my plan I've gotten all sorts of comments; while the negative (especially the unnecessarily rude, irrelevant, and wrong) can be painful, it's more than outweighed by the valuable comments I've gotten.

When I look at your image, I see lots of vertical lines. Your trim pieces? Posts? And…pink. Or at least that is what your trim looks like online. I think fewer colors and less contrast between your siding and your trim would be a better look. And, perhaps, fewer materials making up your walls. It looks quite busy and chopped up. Less is more. The more simple, the better. Focus should be on your front door.

One other thought….the fact that the entrance roof is off center would absolutely drive me crazy every time I looked at it. I would stretch the roof across the entire facade, or at least make it symmetrical with the windows on the front of the home. (But that might just be my “problem!”)

Darker roof. Yes.
The body of the home - there are lots of gray. Either stick to one. Or go with a different color.
Are you sold on gray?
I like wood for the posts...
And love the front door color :)

Great suggestions! To avoid painting the roof (@Mark), I added shingles. Ditto for the wood shakes and posts :) Also painted vertical trim the body color instead of trim color to remove some of the vertical lines, what a difference that makes! Please take another look and see what you think. Keep the body color dark or lighten it a shade to create more contrast? I’m not sold on Gray and am open to other colors. Just looking to “nestle” the house in the trees.

Once I have a direction, next step is to gather up paint and material samples to finalize selections and be ready to pull the trigger when our GC says GO!

I thought the PNW was known for cloudy/gray weather? The mock up looks so drab and sad.

One house we owned in the northeast we repainted BM Nantucket Gray and got lots of positive feedback on it. Looks very different when used inside vs outside.

Update. Wanted to come back and thank everyone here who gave feedback. We made many of the changes you suggested. The advice to simplify and to minimize the vertical lines was spot-on! We removed half of the posts, filled in the recess above the roof over the front door (what was that anyway?), used just one siding material (Hardie plank), and painted the corner trim the body color instead of the trim color.

It was too late to change the roof or even to connect the roofs over the front and mud room doors, since they are different pitches.

Body has been painted SW Pewter Green. Trim is SW Gossamer Veil. We should be able to take pics here in the next couple days.
