My much maligned (by me) Lady in Red is redeeming itself
Some of you may remember my grumbling about Lady in Red dying back every year. It is supposed to be zone 4 so I expected better. Also for me, not really a climber. More like a nice bush. So if I ever get a true climber that needs the supports we will probably take them from Lady in Red.
But I have to say, during the summer when the beetles are eating most of my roses before the day is out Lady in Red is showing off.
Her flowers are a rich true red. Hard to get a good photo with my camera but today has such a strong smoke overcast that I thought I'd try and they came out pretty good. A couple of roses will have 1 beetle but overall this rose does really well in not attracting them.
Dick Koster seems immune to Japanese Beetles. The bush hasn't grown very much, planted Aug. 2018, but the flowers last a long time. The bush they take cuttings from at High Country Roses is about 3 times this size so I'm expecting over the years it may get bigger. Does not seem to die back so that is promising for eventual size.

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoLove those bush shots !! Your roses are very healthy with lots of blooms. Agree that Japanese Beetles leave the dark-red roses with zillion petals alone. Red with zillion petals: Rouge Royal, W.S. 2000, Munstead Wood, the Dark lady, Tess of d'Ubervilles, the Squire, Wenlock, Tradescant and Barcelona ... never see Japanese Beetles on them. Below is 7th-year-own root Munstead Wood, it's a continuous bloomer and gives me cut-blooms twice a week. Nearby rose park's Munstead Wood (grafted-on-Dr.Huey) was a black-spot fest so I bought mine as own root and love its health and continuous blooming.

Comments (38)Oh little lady! Around here it's used when men mean to be polite & is most often used by men of a certain age. When we were living in Dallas a young couple bought a the house next to ours. It had been vacant for about a year & before that was a rental property, so it wasn't in the best shape. One Saturday the parents of the husband were there helping to work on the house. The dad was scraping paint off the outside woodwork & soffits as I was leaving to run some errands. I told him he should be wearing a face mask as the pain probably contained lead. He sort of blew me of with the attitude of "this woman doesn't know what she's talking about" & I went on my way with my own stereotype thinking he was a stupid geezer. The next weekend he was back & he stopped me during my work in the front garden. He told me that I had been right! That he had gone home & the next day was coughing up all sorts of "junk" that he'd inhaled. Comments (20)RetiredFL - the Lambiekins (or so she was tagged - see photo) contributed to the alternating petal colors. The rest was Mother Nature's cocktail. I'm new at this too, but my marked vine - which is growing in a massive LM mess, continues to produce the same flowers. I tagged the vine that produced the first odd bloom the same day and have traced its branches and determined that it is its own plant. Comments (21)I have a 10 ft male tree, driving a nail into it can change the sex? Does the type of nail matter? Galvanized or plain steel? I'd like to try this on mine. I have a number of small ones started from seed but not flowering yet. Once I know I have some females I'll probably remove the male tree. Comments (9)It's nice of you to do this for your new neighbor, and I think it's a good idea to float the idea with her first. How much advance notice is appropriate? A couple of weeks is more than enough, I think. Do I have to check with everyone's schedule before finalizing a date? I wouldn't, with more than 3 or 4 people. It will probably be impossible to find a date that EVERYONE can make; so be it. Just pick a date that works for the guest of honor and perhaps the woman you most want her to meet, and just go with that. What would be an appropriate start time? Noon or earlier? It doesn't matter. I'd start at 12 or 1 to give myself more time to get ready. But if for some reason you want to start earlier, say, 11:30, call it brunch. Do I specify a end-of-party time on an invitation? No. I know invited friends will ask what they can bring, but I like to have complete menu control. I want to be generous, and I want the food to be Just So, as in My Way. What do I politely say to gals who offer to bring something? DON'T say anything about "just so" or "my way," which suggests that you think they would bring unworthy offerings. I would say, "Not this time, thanks -- but thanks for offering." I have found that people seem to understand when I put it like that and send a written invitation. If someone drives you crazy insisting, ask her to bring ice or borrow her coffee pot or something. Should I end with coffee as well? I would always offer coffee with lunch, but perhaps you could get away with iced tea instead. What does your group usually do? Are there dietary restrictions I need to accommodate? If you are asking whether you have to plan a kosher, vegan, salt-free, nut-free, wheat-free, sugar-free, no-carb, lo-fat meal just in case someone MIGHT have a problem -- no, you don't! 2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoW.S. 2000 has the best bush-shape but it's always tiny like a mini-rose !! It's a continuous bloomer and I cut it daily for the vase, so it's always short. Below pic. was taken this July 21 as 11th-year-own-root. It has about 1 foot of green cane after each winter:
W.S. 2000 blooms are big, so all the energy goes toward making blooms, rather than growing tall. Below is large W.S. bloom above a smaller Tess of d'Urberville bloom. Pic. taken this July 28:
I would nominate The Dark Lady and The Squire as the most cane-hardy after zone 5 winter. Below is bush-shot of The Dark lady (drought tolerant due to Rugosa genetics), but W.S. 2000 is a water-hog (best for high rain and partial shade). Below 7th-year own-root Dark Lady is in partial shade but it pumps out blooms weekly:

Lady in Red seems to be flourishing in the heat and providing a bright spot in the Japanese Beetle munched rose bed so it doesn't look like Quadra would be a good replacement.
We can't go outside anymore. The air is too bad. It has been bad for over a month. This is how I enjoy my roses now. Through the window screen.
