NYC prewar bathroom renovation - keep the tub?

I am doing a gut renovation of a prewar apartment in UWS, and I need to decide whether to keep the original tub. I love it, but the plumber and super are recommending I replace it because the drain is rotting.
I want to know if I should heed their advice, or if there's a way to update the plumbing/drain while keeping the tub?
Apparently I'll need an exposed full 2” triple lever tub waste for a double wall (apron) bathtub. Has anyone kept their tub but updated their plumbing? Where did you get the plumbing from?

Give the bathroom a really good cleaning, reseal all the grout, and otherwise leave the d**n thing alone. It's just fine the way it is.

Take the large amount of money I just saved you and divide into two equal piles. Send one pile to me.

Have u done the renovation? if so how did it go?

If no How expensive is it to replace the tub and plumbing vs just replacing the plumbing?

I would keep the tub if u I could and just replace the plumbing.

I would not replace a tub or plumbing myself I would have a plumber and whoever works on tubs and showes replace the plumbing and tub.

we had access to my 1920 corner tub drain from a closet and were able to replace the drain! White‘s plumbing in West Haven ct was such a help with the parts.

I have similar cross rosetts too!

First question: Does the drain/faucet for the tub HAVE to be on the left wall? If it's possible to move it, I would suggest you consider having vanity next to tub, (Place faucet on right side), though I don't know if there are code requirements as to how close vanity can be to tub edge. I've seen lots on Houzz where they touch, but that may only be for soaker tubs. This would give you the opportunity to place toilet next to wall, which would let you position the toilet roll holder far enough forward to be comfortable. When they are installed on side of vanity, many people find it awkward to reach back... This also eliminates the issue of bathing right next to the toilet, and I find being right next to the wall, it offers more privacy too. We put in a pocket door, and I can't believe how much it opens up the small space. If you use a 28" door, it would be tight, but doable. We have 33.5" inches between wall and vanity for our toilet, I am a big gal and have no problems with this space. I would opt for 2 more inches in tub area over 2" in vanity. But check tub dimensions, it's surprising how much they vary, some 32" tubs may actually be smaller inside than some 30" tubs!

Take a look at the American Standard Princeton tub made of Americast. It feels a lot like cast iron, but it is lighter than cast iron (but feels more sturdy to me than acrylic). They are nice and low so its easy to lean over the edge to bath kids. I even bought one for my master bathtub. I don't like deep tubs, I'd rather sit in a shallow, very hot bath and be able to lean over the edge and grab my phone or magazine :-) But you can fill them up pretty full also, if you prefer deeper water.

No way would joining Direct Buy be a sensible decision for you. You are only planning to spend $6- $10,000.00 in total, so you'd be spending close to $6K just to get in the door. Besides the contract fee there are yearly fees. I did join Direct Buy- we are doing a total house reno from top to bottom (literally), replacing all windows and doors, gutting, rewiring, jackhammering concrete to put in drains, new roof- well you get the idea... I was enthralled by all the possibilities when I went for my visit. Luckily for me, I did go without my husband- signed the contract by myself- and after researching that night at home, I was heartsick that I had made such a stupid decision. WE played good cop/bad cop when we went back in- I composed a letter asking for a refund, and they very graciously DID give us our money back. So kudos to that particular DirectBuy outlet. However, I did a fair amount of research (albeit a day too late), and did discover that there are many many issues with DB. The least of which is, shipping and handling fees which can be 25%, and that they are not refunded if you decide you do not want the product you ordered. And, if I'm not mistaken, the item is delivered to the warehouse, not your home address, so there's that whole issue... I'm not going to go into a litany of all the problems, but suggest you google direct buy consumer concerns for yourself. Again, I reiterate- I do NOT think you should consider joining. You will NOT save any money, particularly just on ONE bathroom reno.

Thanks for the advice! No DIY for sure... will be hiring professional contractor, plumber, architect and kitchen designer. I figure it would be pricey. The kitchen is 13ft by 6ft but of course the dumbwaiter is taking up a large portion of the space in the corner. The bathroom is 5ft by 8ft. The ceilings are 11ft tall so will definitely take advantage of the vertical space... what would you recommend for both the bathroom and kitchen? Should I expand the dumbwaiter large enough where I could possibly fit a fridge or keep it as a large closet instead? I spoke to my co-op board and I can expand the dumbwaiter but to be mindful of the low bearing walls. i am submitting a proposal to the co-op board before work begins.

You may think me crazy, but I say keep the tub if you can and keep all but the toilet and shower bars above the tub. Seems like a new coat of paint and new or cleaned grout will go a long way. So many of the items in this bath are just gorgeous and need some TLC.

You should definitely keep the bathtub. To beautify the space, you can add color accents with natural stone. Can t wait to see the final result. <3

That is a DREAM bathtub in a dream bathroom! If an apartment doesnt have a tub, I wont even consider it. But that there is the kind if bathroom a renter like me would make a lot of concessions for. (I live in NYC). Sounds like you were able to salvage it, thank god. Please dont ever change that bathroom!

Hi, I love this. What do you use to attach a shower head to your curtain rod? I live in a similar prewar setup and we have a window that won't accept our suction cup shower head holder in the winter cold.

Sam, it looks like that 'curtain rod' is actually a water pipe doing dual duty. Note the two sets of faucet handles on the wall. I'm assuming one set controls the tub filler and the other set controls the shower head.
