hallway eating area

Hi everyone,

I am moving into an apartment and I’m trying to get ideas for what kind is table I could get in this area. I love
High topr tables,
Iam into contemporary and industrial design.

Get the measurements and go look at stores near you. Probably a cafe set would be best in terms of not impinging on the walkway, but if you ever plan on having company, maybe a narrow table with a leaf that could be raised to enlarge temporarily.

ooh...that's exciting to see the separate fridge/freezer in the layout. Because the boys are so young, only dinner is a "sit-down" meal. Breakfast and lunch are usually the boys sitting down while other work is being done in kitchen - cooking and cleaning. But maybe if their designated seats are the non-sink and dishwasher side it won't be a problem. I hadn't considered setting the fridge all the way back before. That does bridge the space between the main kitchen and the far hallway. Also I like not having the fridge on the stove wall, so it will be easier to make the stove a nice focal point. DH and I weren't crazy about the fridge on the sink wall either, but wasn't sure if it was "reasonable" or not. I'll nix that idea. I did have some 2 opening plans. I kind of liked the door there because it gave access to bathroom and lined up with the door to the family room. But previously I couldn't figure out how to get the island in if I scooted things down that wall. I will re-look at that. Thanks for your observations and suggestions!

Oh crud. All you practical people who don't like split skulls and broken legs had to chime in :^) You can't really see it from the pic that includes the family room, but the wood is a perimeter there with carpet in the middle. We like that look and don't really want to put carpet all the way to the step (to provide the visual clue). Also, that wood strip (the one just below the step) is a high traffic area between the back door and door to the garage. We have friends (who have the same model) with the whole family room carpeted and that path on the carpet gets pretty dirty. So, we aren't in favor of any plan that puts carpet or anything else (e.g. bookcase) on that wood strip. We are replacing all of the wood on the upper level with the remodel (if we don't replace, there is a lot of patching that needs to be done because the wood is not currently under the cabinets. It was only $800 more to replace and when the wood was installed by the previous owner, it wasn't properly acclimated and there are large gaps). We can easily do something like Chicagoans suggested: using the wood pattern or stain color to define the edge of the step. Any ideas or pictures of this? Also, I measured the area behind the chairs to the step: 3.5 feet with the chair pushed in. 2.5 feet with someone sitting. 1.5 feet with a normal push the chair out to get up. 1 foot with a bug push the chair out to get up.

I think I'd be more concerned about the sink and stove being 12 feet from the refrigerator. Where is your prep area? How far is the table from where you store your dishes, and from where you plate food (if you plate in the kitchen) or from where you fill the serving dishes? And from the dishwasher?

Neither option is great. As it is, you exit your bedroom to a view of the garage door, and any shoes that might have been left in that hall. I don’t see a good drop zone for “stuff”. On the other hand, having the bedroom door exit to the dining nook gives you less privacy. But, it is nicer to walk out to, and is more convenient throughout the day. And would let you reconfigure the closet and bath to allow more space in the laundry and service hall, better drop zone. But, since you didn’t ask but shared the whole plan... You lose a lot of storage in your closet and potential drop-zone or hook space in the laundry room, by having a door from closet to laundry. By having rods in the closet corners, you already have unusable or inaccessible hanging space. Is it really that far to walk around? Maybe you could have a small pass through instead? Don’t do double doors to the bathroom, they are a bother. Having the other three bedrooms approached through the living room gives you less usable space in the living room. If you can move Bedroom #4 forward, the foyer can lead to the bedrooms, creating a nice straight route from the laundry and garage. A bit more gracious, and a bit more private for those bedrooms. And, you won’t have a view from the kitchen to the hall bathroom! For lighting, consider solatubes in the halls. In the kitchen, the refrigerator seems to be up against the wall; be sure you can open the fridge door past 90 degrees. It might need to move over a bit. And, please reconsider the angled sink in the island. When the dishwasher is open, it’s in the way of where you are standing. Where will the dishes and silverware be stored? Post your kitchen in Kitchens, they are great at helping people create the best layout for their families.

Is there a closet door on the wall on right, as that will limit size/shape/placement of table to only the other corner. Can you take a picture from the front hall looking in. First step is to measure and identify a location (tape out to help).

Consider counter or regular height, as it may not feel as awkward and I’d also add art to ground the space.

If using corner, suggest round and having 4 chairs is always optimal, if room.

If going lengthwise, use rectangle.

If for everyday eating, high table is not recommended. They have also gone out of favor completely. Let’s see rest of space and see if there is a better overall solution.

I totally get wanting to use every inch of space. The way it looks to me, the only space you have is here

Can you post measurements of the space?

I would look into tables that fold down. Maybe two chairs on either end for daily use

and pulled out for more seating. Store extra folding chairs.

IMO the drop leaf shown above is the only one to fit that space and will be crowded even with chairs only on one side . . Is there no other space for dining in the floor plan this seems an odd layout for even a tiny space.

You don't give measurements, but try to find something like this set up for the corner.

We had a condo in Harvard Square with an entry just like yours.

3 feet wide won't give you much room at all. Instead, I'd use the hallway for bookcases (storage!), and put a small dining table against the living room wall, opposite the windows.
