Comments (14)I agree with quiltglo's list - ditto the stained trim. I would also have all my outdoor wood (trim, deck, fences, etc.) stained rather than painted. I am so sick of scraping paint! Some kind of TRULY scrubbable paint for the interior. I wouldn't want the huge bathrooms that I see in many new houses. My 2 baths are both quite small but perfectly adequate. I would like to have a big linen closet, though! Closets that are big enough - I wouldn't want huge things that ended up as dumpsters, but roomy and well set-up. I love my hardwood floor and use a vacuum. Why not? I'd like to have those dishwasher drawers, because I don't usually have a full load of dishes every night. My sister designed her house to be very low maintenance. She has: stacking washer and dryers in the master suite, and another set on the bottom floor where the kids' rooms are. She has all tile floors and radiant heat (no dust blowing around - heaven!) A fairly small kitchen with a good sized pantry closet. Slab-type cabinets with no hardware - they have some sort of magnetic catch; you just press the door to open them. It is based on a Lindal-style home, so it is mostly glass and wood. Cedar shingles that require little maintenance. Slip-covers on the couches that can be machine washed. Mesh-type blinds that don't collect dust. Long, shallow closets in the kids room with clever shelving and drawers - they don't need dressers! An office with a built in office wall - files, bookcases, computer desk, cubbies. A deck and a screened in porch overlooking the lake, so they can eat outside a good portion of the year. She is very minimalist, but is a fantastic photographer and her DS is a painter - the house shows off the art beautifully. She's got her kids well trained too - that's probably the biggest labor saver of all! I wish I had a fireplace - do you all think they are more trouble than they are worth? Comments (42)I believe many of us would disagree with lazypup. I wouldn't want to live next door to Paris or Martha either. I'd really rather have some neighbors a bit closer to my own value system. Like being honest. Or not driving while drunk. One nice thing about doing FSBO is personal contact with a possible buyer. We had one family look at our house who had children needing special education services and they asked many questions about the local elementary school. I told her that we were moving to get away from that school and told her our experiences there and why we were willing to go the expense of picking up and moving. Comments (31)We have cedar siding. We live on the CT shore. I wish we had vinyl because it's easier to powerwash. We have to wash every other year. Off the coast two miles we might not have to do it but every 5-6 years. Brick is not common in New England. It was reserved for public buildings & not many of those. Most were hand-chiseled granite block which we have lots of. New England had/has lots of trees for siding. We do not have clay for brick building. Clay had to be shipped up from the Manhattan area in the colonial days where there was a thriving pottery industry as early as 1st Q 18th century. It was easier to get bricks in Vermont than Connecticut or Massachuesetts because they brought it up the Hudson to Vermont hence the pottery industries in Bennington. End of history lesson. Today's vinyl is very nice & virtually maintenance free. Quirky, if you lived in New England you'd have a tough time with your vinyl phobia. Depending on exact size & age it costs $15-$40K+ to repaint a colonial-style home in New England & it has to be done every 5 years, or so. The older the home the more expensive the paint job. Old wood & paint are like oil/water. Paint just doesn't stick on old wood no matter what the prep. We have lots of experience with old wood siding in New England. New homes are vinyl. There are five $2.5M homes being built near me. They are vinyl wrapped. We can be crusty on occassion here; but we are not stupid. Also, a New England Cape Cod, Saltbox, or Colonial home would look just plain silly with brick, rock, or some other hard-looking material. Comments (29)DH says the runway is long enough for small jets at 4000 feet. Jets probably won't fly over your house often; some may. Piston-engine planes will be flying a pattern over your house at times; it depends how tight a pattern they fly. Twin engines will not be flying very tight. Here's some info on the airport. Note the noise-abatement part at the bottom. Good luck! DH says if you're worried about engine noise you should probably look elsewhere; there's going to be some.
