Suggestions for ugly 70's exterior
Comments (19)Wendy, I am with you that the rock facing is quite unattractive, and IMO it can't be saved with paint or other camouflage such as plants. It is different from your inspiration photo in that the inspiration photo looks like stacked stone and is in the foundation area, not flat stones fastened on fairly randomly as siding, oriented like tile. If funding allows, remove it. If not, see if it can be covered up with stucco or siding without needing to then fix or replace windows. As a last resort, plan to plant at least some taller shrubs with flowers or other interest to distract from that stone once the hardscape issues are solved. Rethink the entry; remove some of the paving along the garage (or at the very least add some large planters there) and take out the brick wall to make it feel more welcoming. Pull out the skinny bed under the eaves across the front because it really isn't large enough for plants or proportional to the size of the house. Replace the bed with one that is at least 6' deep from the front of the house - that will give you at least a foot between the house and the ultimate size of the plantings (for maintenance) as well as room for more than a single straight line of plants....See MoreExterior stucco color & front door placement
Comments (42)Thanks Emily. I thought the same! But was worried it would look weird. Still not sure so we just decided to leave it. We could always have them stucco it in the future if we decide it doesn’t look good. In the meantime, we will sand and paint a color similar to house/garage. Here is it today! So excited. Finish coat going on tomorrow(!!), but.. I can’t decide on a color. Oatmeal is much lighter and much more yellow than I hoped. Our stucco guy tried 1/2 strength Clay but may be too pinky-brown. And he tried 50/50 Oatmeal/Clay which might work. Here are the samples, in order. I might try more samples today (and bigger)!! Also, here is a new house going up in our neighborhood. I like the color but don’t know what it is.. Any thoughts? I want a neutral beige. Not yellow and not pink. ..not easy to find. Anyone that can lend a suggestion, I’d appreciate it! Phuninthesun, if you are out there, would love your thoughts too. And Emily & HIWE! Thank you!!!...See MoreModern Exterior design - Colors? Stucco? Metal? Ideas please! :)
Comments (24)Masonry, especially stucco takes extra care in humid climates with the current booming construction markets. Your existing perforated or woven housewrap suggests questionable long term durability with that choice. If you stucco be sure to mind the gap. Gaps are important in most cladding systems so metal, wood or engineered siding installed on a rainscreen would be safer choices for durability considering most labor markets. Looks like you guys got continuous sill flashing below your windows so you seem to be ahead of the game compared to most projects involving weatherproofing....See MoreUgly stucco exterior Phase 1
Comments (23)I would do the interior and roof and leave the exterior as is. it can wait for Phase 2. When are the windows to be replaced? Are you replacing with same size windows. Because window replacement will impact both interior & exterior...exterior more so. You could just paint all one color but paint isn't so cheap anymore and if Phase 2 is happening in the next year of two, I would leave as is....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
