How to install SDL bars as window muntins

I’m fixing up our kitchen exterior door instead of replacing it. It currently has a screened window (half lite) that can slide up. I’m going to have a local glass shop swap it out for one sheet of glass and then add some custom SDL muntins. This is all a diy experiment.

I have two questions - first, do I need to ask for spacer bars between the glass when I have the glass replaced? Are these necessary? I’m curious because I ordered the SDL grille with a profile based on adding just a single sheet of glass. Was this wrong?

Second, what’s the correct way to install the SDL grille? Do you just peel off the backing of the VHB tape and stick them on? Do you recommend running a bead of caulk around the edges or anything like that before painting?

Thanks!
