leaves turning yellow on newly transplanted mountain ash tree

Hi,

We recently moved to a new home where the builder transplanted a young mountain ash. Starting 1-2 weeks ago the leaves started turning yellow. Please see the photo attached. The leaves have brown edges, and they are turning yellow from the centre outward.

At first, when only a few leaves were turning yellow, we had thought it was underwatered (given that we are going through an extreme heat wave) + transplant shock, so we have been giving it a ton of water every day. However, 2 weeks later, more and more leaves are browning and yellowing.

The soil around the tree is consistently wet. Is this still transplant shock or we have swung over to overwatering?

those leaves are lost.. they arent going to recover ... no matter what you do.. so stop fixating on them ...

water properly ... deeply and infrequently ... and hope the roots are settling in and growing ...

it might releaf ... hard to guess ...

this dude out to stick to building.. rather than tree planting ...

what is your base soil type;. does it drain ..

proper watering has nothing to do with giving it a ton every day ... drowning it might be as bad as not enough ... are you applying it so it can soak down into the root mass planted ... or just sprinkling it on the surface???

Yep, water deep and in your case about 24 inches deep and do this every two weeks. A bigger tree would need water down deeper but I'm guessing the root ball wasn't more then 24 inches for your tree. They need moist soil so put a hose on it and let it trickle for 8 to 10 hours where there is little runoff and do this once a week until early fall and than continue until late fall every two weeks.

Kestrel...drainage is of paramount importance as everyone here has mentioned. I don't think that is your problem, in fact, I don't even think you have a problem. My Hale Haven does this every single year since it was planted, and it most certainly does not have any drainage issue whatsoever as there is almost zero clay content here and the tree has awesome drainage. I don't see any indication of any common peach tree issues either. You just planted it, so give it an opportunity to acclimate itself. In the future however be mindful of what these folks have said regarding the bathtub effect of adding compost/potting soil to plantings in heavy clay though. The best peach I've ever eaten was a Red Haven, and is/was the most widely planted peach in the USA. There is a reason for that. It is however susceptible to bacterial spot, something that runs rampant in our zone. Really though, peaches in general offer little in the way of disease resistance anyway, so I think your family made a good choice and with a little luck will be a nice tree for you.

cjsm, thank you so much for the follow-up. I am hearing rather conflicting messages from different people though - my local nursery people told me to keep on watering, since this is a new tree and the root system is not well-developed yet. On the other hand, I hear what you are saying and the overwatering theory in clay soil (which I also have) definitely makes sense! I think I am going to stop watering it for a few days and see what happens. You know, it's hard when you see the leaves drooping in the strong afternoon sun and still not water it! At least it is getting cooler around here these days... BTW, cjsm, my tree was planted in a big planting hole on a slope, and I had plenty of cow manure and things amending the local clay soil, so I think I don't need to take it out to raise it more. I hope this does the trick! Thank you again for your info.

Love your Bottlebrush tree! I noticed in your pictures that you have the mulch all the way up to the trunk. Maybe you might try clearing it out leaving a clean 12 inch diameter around the trunk. It sounds like you are doing all the right things though. I planted two Bottlebrush trees last year and they both had some yellow leaves after planting too. I wouldn't be too concerned. I watered mine every two days for about a month and then twice a week throughout the summer and I have clay soil here in the Houston area. I did amend the soil with some quality potting soil mix before planting and fertilized twice so far with MicroLife fertilizer (made in Texas!). Good luck with your new tree!
