Tile Material/Shape for DIY kitchen backsplash

I've looked around for this question that seems simple but can't find an answer.

I'm going to tile my kitchen backsplash and I'm wondering what a novice tiler should choose or avoid in the way of tile material and tile shape. It is a straight wall - no corners - with two outlets to tile around.

I know I need a tile that can handle some water.

Are there specific tile materials that will make my life easier/harder. E.g., I think I should avoid glass as that will be harder to cut.

Same easier/harder question with shape. I like hex shapes or mosaic tiles but I wonder if they will be harder to cut and place than something else?

I.e., what is the easiest (or a few of the easiest) tile shapes and materials for a novice to put on a wall?

About me: I've tiled twice before, many years ago. I tiled a floor with 12 inch ceramic tiles and a wall with 6 inch ceramic tiles. I used a manual tile splitter for the projects. I would not be adverse to renting a wet saw.
