HELP! Did I make a mistake? Bathroom Vanity and sink

I am in the process of updating my ensuite bathroom. I purchased a more functional vanity that is 60 inches installed, 59.22 inches base width. I purchased the vanity top separately and only after completing my purchase did I realize that I purchased a vanity top that is 60x22. Can I leave it like this? If so, what are the risks I could be facing (water leaks, odd look) or do I need to have that extra inch that I am not finding out is recommended (61x22). Does anyone have experience with this issue? It's still being processed so I won't have actual delivery until Sept 9th, so if I need to remedy this by exchanging for a 61 inch sink I would like to get started.

You seemed to have danced all around your problem without actually naming it. Are you concerned about the overhang not being long enough, with less than an inch to split between the two ends? Are you afraid that with too small a drip edge, water will run down the sides of the vanity?

What kind of installation will the vanity have? Alcove? Or simply along a wall?

Is this a single sink vanity or two sinks?

Hi Nancy -

I'm concerned that the fit won't be tight enough and could cause water damage to the vanity. This is a double sink vanity top and it will be installed along a wall. Just reading that you should measure your sink an inch longer than the vanity itself and I'm concerned that I ordered the wrong vanity top.

Does this help clarify my ask?

It's a rental. With that in mind, my go to choice would be an undermount. Second would be a drop-in. Never ever would I put a vessel in a rental. Do consider that if the vanity was designed for a vessel that any intrusion below the countertop might interfere with vanity storage. Draw functionality, etc. One sink versus two? If the bathroom is small, that might lead you to one sink. One person washing at a time, more counter space, etc. Plus, with your budget being tight? One sink will save you. If you think you'll have trouble renting this place and you think you might need an edge, or if you're renting to a couple/family, then two sinks could give you an edge in a tight rental market. Sometimes it's all about the bling. Just make sure that before you go the two sink route that the vanity itself can take two undermount sinks, or two drop-in sinks, PLUS the plumbing, without completely losing the functionality of the top bank of drawers in the vanity. If an undermount will cause you to lose storage, then I'd minimize the amount of lost storage by going with one sink.

olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? I did as Kats suggests several years ago with former house. I had room for a spacious vanity with a remodel and opted for one right sink, a bank of wide drawers for storage, and a much needed built in laundry hamper. A local cabinet maker made the vanity and a towel tower, GC installed corian top. I chose alder with a whitewashed and glazed finish, it was not a budget breaker.

I had the exact same problem. I picked out the vanity I wanted but did not think about the fact that it wasn't made to sit flush against the wall. I spent a month looking for something else, but in the end we decided to go with something shorter and have it not be against the wall. But we were going from 72" to 60" which is probably not workable in your mom's situation. I did find a lot of vanities that did have flat sides and could work in a corner, if you are willing to have the countertop fabricated. They just need to not have any trim detail on the top or bottom like the one you picked out does. I would just look at the ones without the pre-made tops. Because the pre-made top will still leave you with a slight gap because of the countertop overhang. This is an example: Avanity Modero which is sold everywhere, not just at Lowe's. The cabinet we ended up buying is an Avanity Madison which won't work for you, but I assume it is of similar quality. We are pretty happy with it. The drawers and doors have soft close but I do feel like the glides in my Ikea kitchen drawers are better quality. It is very pretty and I wanted a stained wood so I am really happy with our choice. If I had been willing to go with a painted finish, I think we might have stuck with the 72" Modero.

“you should measure your sink an inch longer than the vanity itself” makes no sense. Do you maybe mean the vanity counter or top?

The reason for having the vanity top longer than the vanity box is that you will have a nice drip edge. That means that when water gets to the end of the vanity, it will dangle there and form a drop and drip to the floor instead of running down the side of the vanity. This is only a problem if you are planning to have water sitting on your counter top. That is why I asked how many sinks it will have. It may be an issue if you have sloppy people with a sink close to the end of the countertop (like when you have two sinks), but is no problem at all if you have one sink in the center of a 60” vanity. You would have to be pretty messy to have water dripping down the sides with one center sink.

Oops, just noticed that you said double sinks! It would not be a problem unless people using the sink splash a lot and leave water all over the counter top. If the vanity comes with the measurement you gave, and the top comes the size it is supposed to be, the top will cover the vanity, but will leave a little less than a half inch overhang.
