The five roses you could do without!
Comments (131)Aaron: What are the qualities in Moonlight Romantica that you don't like? Thanks for any info. I thought about buying it for the vigor, too many rabbits here that devour short roses. Agree with you on weird long cane shooting out out a round bush, saw that with Cream Veranda in a pot for $5 at HomeDepot .. sniffed that and it was odd fruity for me. No regrets not buying, I am spoiled by Marie Pavie's perfect round bush. Carol: Thank you. My roses are healthy thanks to alkaline clay. In my last house with acidic black clay and FULL SUN, roses were blackspot-fest & wimpy. In my present house of alkaline black clay & very shady garden, leaves and blooms are pale but healthy. I find that at alkaline pH, roses bloom well if given alfalfa meal & sulfate of potash & SOLUBLE fertilizer. I put too much garden lime in the planting hole of band-size-Marie-Pavie, and leaves turn pale, but it pumped out 5 buds (fertilized with alfalfa meal & soluble fertilizer). In contrast, another bigger-gallon-Marie-Pavie planted MG-potting soil, fertilized with MG-soluble for roses refused to bloom for months even with dark-green leaves. The pot was too acidic with accumulated rain-water. Click on below chart to see all the major nutrients are less available at pH below 5, and rain-water here pH is 4.5 (same with the East Coast): Below is a map of USA showing the pH of rain:...See MoreMy Sister's Mystery Roses
Comments (24)Thanks for all of your assistance so far! You guys nailed the second apricot. I'm putting together a label order and I'm officially putting JUST JOEY down for that one. This makes sense because the former owner definitely liked ordering things in multiples. I already found a metal tag for another Just Joey. The house was built in 1998. It was listed for sale by the occupant owner, then foreclosed on by the bank, then purchased by a non-occupant investor, then finally purchased by my sister. I believe it went in and out of escrow 6 times! (The real estate market is so crazy right now!) My sister doesn't know anything about gardening, so I'm giving her a crash course. I bought her some elbow length gloves and a hand pruner to start her out. She knows I'm super excited about her rose windfall, so she's letting me buy labels for her roses. I found metal tags and/or recognized about 25 roses. The roses appear to be 5- 10 years old. I know the Yellow/Red blend is not Perfect Moment since I grow that one. Based on the HMF pictures and the comments, I'm leaning towards Granada. For the Pink, it sounds like it's Bewitched. Boy, the Bewitched pictures and the Queen Elizabeth pictures on HMF look almost identical! The house has 2 Queen Elizabeths already, so I can compare them. The yellow could be Midas Touch since there is another Midas Touch at the house. I'll have to compare the two. For the coral, the HMF pictures look the most like Artistry. Plus, there was no fragrance, which I believe would knock out Tropicana and Fragrant Cloud. For the first apricot, Tahitian Sunset is too new for the age of the plant. So I'm going with Sunset Celebration. So I'm going to go ahead and tentatively fill out the label order form for Just Joey, Sunset Celebration, Bewitched, Granada and Artistry. If I'm wrong, labels are cheap! Thanks for your help. Next time I go to my sister's house, I'll take more pictures and post them. THANKS!!...See MorePortland Rose Garden visit
Comments (6)Chrysler Imperial has a wonderful fragrance (at least to me). I have bought many Queen Elizabeths through the years, and also do not care for the color. I also do not care for the growing style. It grows so high, then I am told by those who love it, that you must cut it way back for it to rebloom well. I just saw Granada this past year, and thought it was beautiful. I could not find it, but bought two Rainbow Sorbet that I thought were similar. My husband just loves Voodoo. We do love Distant Drums, but it is an unusual color. I put Honey Dijon beside Hot Cocoa, and it looked ok, but I do not really care for it. You are fortunate to live near or in Portland where you can visit those gardens. Sammy...See MoreGive Me Gaudy! Your most Flamboyant Rose
Comments (78)Diane, Now I am trying to figure out what was it about Augusta that I decided not to get it, after all. Maybe it was not available? :) I still have Dee-lish in the small pot it came with from Wallmart. I tortured it like this the entire summer; it survived, but obviously couldn't do much in those crammed conditions. I was thinking to dig up Dick Clark and place Dee-lish in its place, to let it show what it can do. But what if I were to do this with Augusta Luise instead? Or maybe put Augusta in a container? The picture here makes it sound like it would do well in a container too: https://www.rosen-stange.de/images/product_images/original_images/augusta-luise-k-bel.jpg Then again, we all know what pictures on the Internet say it's possible and what actually IS possible. How some people get so much bloom from one plant is still beyond me! I really need to get rid of one to get in another one, I can't keep adding. Yet I somehow can't make myself get rid of Dick Clark, as much as I hate the color. It seems like a lot of trouble to dig it up, plus it grows large and sturdy, blooms pretty well, and blooms have a relatively long vase life. But IT IS my one garish rose....See Moreportlandmysteryrose
