has anyone far away from an ikea store used ikea cabinets?
Comments (3)Many years ago, when the closest IKEA was 6 hours drive, we did this. I definitely recommend taking a road trip to see them in person before you order, though. The ones we chose from the catalog didn't look as nice in person, but some we had never considered were fabulous in real life, so we got those instead. The IKEA we used had a kitchen design staff (some do not) so we were assigned one person who helped us coordinate our order. I think this is important as there are so many little parts you might not realize you need. They shipped the whole order to us in a freight truck. It was a great experience. The cabinets were great. Make sure you allow LOTS of time to put them together, if you are DIY. If you're having someone install them, see if you can get a recommendation from Ikea for your town. Many carpenters have no clue how to use the Ikea system. We assembled the boxes ourselves (since it would have negated the savings if we'd hired someone to do so) but had the carpenters install. They could not understand the Ikea instructions and ended up just screwing the boxes to the wall. I would have preferred they'd used the Ikea hager system.... Hope this helps. Comments (22)Not knowing the sq. footage of your space, it's hard to push you in that direction... my tile is just those three walls (can't see the the third) - as the sink is set into that space and stands alone. I think all said and done it was $400 for tile and labor - but the guy just came in to do this job. You'll be bidding out for more tile than just this.... so labor wise, it probably won't add much to your overall labor cost. I purchased at a local tile store - but was just in Lowes last night and they have some really pretty glass accents (like the one I used) -- if that's your thing. It just added a little extra interest. The wall where my towel holder is (to the left of the sink) was just full of water drip stains. You can't get them out. It was either re-paint every couple years or tile. As for your sink choice - I truly believe it comes down to the look you want to achieve. The all white cabinet, with white subway tiles and accent tiles would look pretty awesome. I can't imagine that the fiberboard is any less durable than the pine.......See MoreIkea Kitchen Cabinet Ordering Tips
Comments (20)I just placed my order for cabinets yesterday, our ikea did allow for accessories to be included to get you to the 20%. But this ikea does not allow for additional purchases to be made after the original purchase at the 20% discount. It kind of stinks...they said you get the one time purchase and that is it. The associate told me they used to allow people to come back and purchase additional items, but they had too many contractors taking advantage and making one purchase, then coming back over and over, so they decided to make it a "one time purchase" only at 20%. I had fallen in love with the Atlantic Salt Caesarstone displayed at our ikea...at $55 sq/ft with the discount, it would have been a great price. Unfortunately, I am 80 miles away and out of the range to have the counters fabricated with Ikea's fabricators. Locally I can't find it for less than $100 sq/ft, so I'm back to searching for different countertops.......See MoreHusband ordered 15 inch deep upper Ikea cabinets-- too deep??
Comments (20)We have 15" deep uppers on one side of our Kitchen with standard depth base cabinets (24"D) and counters (~25.5"D) - we have no issues and I don't notice them when I'm working in front of them - and we're a tall family (I'm 5'10" - the shortest!) We have 12" deep uppers on the other side of the Kitchen and I wish we had gone with 15" deep on that side as well! I work primarily on the side with the 15" deep uppers (our Prep & Cooking Zones). Regarding the depth - it should be 18" from the bottom of the light rail to the finished counter so standard small appliances will fit under the upper cabinets. Most countertop small appliances (mixers, coffeemakers, etc.) are designed to fit with an 18" backsplash. If you want to go higher, consider whether you can reach the cabinets (as was mentioned earlier). I probably wouldn't go much higher if you plan to sell in a short time.
