Tile and Grout Sealer

Hi Everyone! Well it is that time of year where I have to scrub my tiles and grout. The tiles are a bit porous and in my picture you can see some dark spots where it is dirty i a high traffic area of the kitchen.. The scrubber and solution I use is great to get this out, but the cleaning to do so takes a bit for my size of kitchen. I was looking to see what recommendations you all have for a good tile and grout sealer, that will also give it a lasting shine. The tiles are on the matte side and I love how they look shiny after a mop.

The best I found was to use strong oxy clean solution and let soak for 30 minutes to get grout clean. After cleaning and let dry good, I put 2 lcoats of 511 Impregnator Sealer. Could never get a good seal, grout was too porous. When soupy wet grout is used instead of a thick grout when grouted it will dry with air bubbles comming up leaving grout porous.

I used a grout brush on long handle to clean grout. Could stand up straigt and do the cleaning. Purchased the grout brush and handle from a janitoral store.

You want to use a tile and grout-specific heavy duty Alkaline cleaner. These are formulated to release the dirt and soiling, but not hurt the grout. Oxi Clean is probably fine too, just not sure how effective it is compared to a purpose-made cleaner.

As far as sealer, I abhor 511. but some people like it. I would use a VOC Free water based formula. They tend to clog up larger pores a little better during the sealing process and won't have an odor to deal with. Keep in mind a sealer will just keep liquids from soaking in as much as before, they will not eliminate the need to maintain the tile and grout.

cheri-- it depends. For installing terracotta tile (which is what you're talking about), you actually use TWO different sealers. The first is a grout release, which should be a water based penetrating sealer, such as Aquamix's Sealers Choice. The second is a top coat sealer, unless you want it to have the raw look to it, in which case, you'd just seal the whole thing after it's grouted with the same water based penetrating sealer. If the grout gets dirty before I seal it, do I have a problem? Or can I clean out the dirt before I seal or color it? OMG, yer gonna hafta rip it all out! (just kidding. :-) Did I get your heart racing?) Seriously-- if it gets dirty, hitting it with oxyclean and then rinsing it well will take care of it-- either way, for the colorant OR the sealer. Bill do you think it wasn't mixed correctly or used to much water when cleaning it? Or I heard tap water could make the grout lighter. Positano, there are more reasons for the grout to come out lighter than stars in the sky, starting with it being a chronic problem that grout charts are sometimes printed more "vividly" than the actual colors. Without analysing a piece of the grout, it would be impossible to say for sure, although your assertions are all possibilities.

That is an adorable turtle! As for the epoxy, it's about the toughest substance out there. I have trouble believing it couldn't go on anything. Unfortunately, I have no real experience with it in the application you're suggesting. If you don't get an answer, maybe try fashioning up something quick and cheap that you wouldn't mind getting ruined (i.e., NOT that adorable turtle), give it a shot and see how it turns out.

I had some bbs stored in my shed, waiting to be mosaiced, and they still cracked!! I usually paint them first to get the silicone to adhere better, of the 1/2 doz I've made I've yet to keep one! The very first one I did, I applied 1/2 marbles to and the lady I gave it to has only had a few pop off and she used silicone adhesive to fix it and I think it's out all winter! That was about 4yrs ago or longer now, so I can't figure it out! I did notice that a few bathroom tiles I've used, on my birdbath and stepping stone feet, are cracking and did not make it thru the winter! grrrr...all that work! Poo! I live and learn, from now on I'm gonna look for tougher tile for major outdoor stuff. Sorry I'm no help, just a whiner!!

Thanks guys. I actually have a really good cleaner and brush from Rejuvenate. It has eliminated time from others thing I tried. I was mainly looking for a sealer to keep things out.
