gem magnolia tree
Comments (4)I would give it a go again despite your loss. Sometimes our shrubs and trees die without apparent cause. Little Gem is supposed to be the hardiest cultivar. Hardier even than Edith Bogue, Brackens Brown or Victoria (three noted larger leaved varieties). Your trees death may not even be winter-related. But if your concern is your winter, I suggest the following. Plant the tree in a somewhat sheltered position--sheltered both from wind and the strongest of winter sun (all broad-leaved evergreens are prone to sunburn in very cold conditions). Make sure the tree goes into the winter well-watered. So water if your autumn is warm and dry. Water in winter during mild periods if the winter is dry. Two more things: BE SURE TO MULCH AND APPLY AN ANTIDESSICANT IN LATE FALL. I apply the antidessicant (sold in almost any garden center) in November to newly planted broadleaved evergreens (holly, laurel, rhododendron, southern magnolia, etc.). My Southern Magnolias (grandiflora) have survived blizzards, ice storms, arctic blasts, droughts, floods, heat waves, and tropical storms and still manage to look as gorgious in June as in January.--I love them! PS. to follow-up poster: I have tried to propagate Timeless Beauty from new growth in the spring without success. I've read that they are not easily propagated this way. If your tree has low hanging branches,I've read that you can fasten them to the ground so that they make contact with the soil and cut after the branch has rooted. Haven't tried this yet....See MoreLinda (doucanoe) is a real gem!
Comments (11)Wow! That is a beautiful handmade card! For some reason handmade paper is an obsession of mine...:-) I purchased all that I could afford, that would fit in my luggage, in San Diego one time. Love love love it! I have been on the receiving end of a few of Linda's beautiful pieces. In a swap I received a set of beautiful handmade square plates that I use all the time when we have guest. I love them. I also have an angel in the window that brings back memories of Linda every time I see it. This is the kind of stuff that makes me happy so I know you are smiling Sharon. WTG Linda!...See MoreTiny powder room into little southwest gem?
Comments (40)Oh, that is fabulous, Annie! Definitely a jolt of happiness on those walls! I love it, but then again, I'm an "orange" girl and adore the color in all forms. Are walls in adjacent rooms also painted in other colors, or do you have the same paint throughout in the rest of your home? I keep wondering how it will look to have just that one tiny room in our house painted a different color. It's right off the hallways extending from the foyer before you enter the open living/kitchen/dining area. Not that its location really matters, but I'm trying to wrap my head around how it would look to have a brilliantly-hued little "cave" behind that one door....See MoreAsplenium hybrid 'Austral Gem' help?
Comments (2)Are you growing this as a houseplant? Do you think the soil that it's potted in now, holds moisture long enough? What conditions do they prefer in the wild? A humidity issue? It's very nice looking. Do you ever add mycorrhizae to any of your houseplant mixes? We are going to have sub zero temperatures and nothing is popping up yet, but the creeping Charley has flower buds. Would the austral gem survive outdoors there in Arkansas? I went through a fern phase eons ago. I had some nice ones, but in time they all died, except for ostrich and Japanese painted. The fern I long for the most is Adiantum pendatum. I think they were on my native plant order last year, but when I drove to the nursery, they were out of them. If I do get a few maidenhairs, they will have to be occasionally hand watered, as are the other 2 fern species. I have absolutely no areas that remain moist all the time. Have you peeked at the roots of the fern to see if they look healthy?...See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
