Clueless guy on 'Infiltrometer' test and Carrier Infinity quote
Comments (5)If you haven't noticed yet, it's kind of a buyer's market out there. Are those reasonable equipment prices? I guess so. Honestly, if you're existing equipment isn't broken, the first money I'd spend would be on air sealing, insulation, and a programmable stat. All that cash on a high-SEER heat pump is wasted when the ducts are blowing the heat into the attic or wherever. If the vendor is savvy enough to do a blower door test, then he should be sizing your system based on ACCA Manual J. You didn't mention that. What we did, and I think it's money well spent, was to find someone independent to do the infiltration test and run the load calc.s. Then, if you have that and an idea of anything else you want to do while replacing the equipment (i.e. sealing ducts, adding a ?return? duct to the second floor), you can easily have multiple bidders price the HVAC work for you. FWIW, I did the sealing and insulation myself when we renovated. I suspect that your HVAC guy would likely sub out the insulation/other work. That may mean there's a markup in there you're paying for single-source convenience. Last thought, it isn't apples to apples, but we're running a 3.5-ton HP for 2200 sq ft in GA. That's w/ improved sealing and insulation that isn't perfect but is a lot better than what was in there originally....See MoreTouchscreen Programmable Thermostats
Comments (4)The touchscreens work fine. I would look into a visionpro series stat with outdoor temp sensor if you have a heat pump so you can have better control of the system. If running more wires is an issue than the visionpro IAQ really shines with two separate units and the 'stat' only needing three wires and the control box wires in at the furnace/air handler which is extremely handy. I have the IAQ now but did have a visionpro 8320 on the old system. You will not find any of these units in a big box store though but they are available on the net or ebay....See MoreMike_home, is this a good idea? re: thermostat
Comments (1)Cindy, I am not a Honeywell thermostat expert, so the best I can do is read the manual. I think this is the manual for your thermostat. Honeywell VisionPro TH8000 Series Installation Manual If you read page 11 it is says the outside temperature will be displayed if you connect an outside sensor. I could be wrong, but I don't think this thermostat has an algorithm which will take into account the outside temperature for making the staging decisions. The sensor only connects to the thermostat and requires no connection to the furnace....See MoreThermostat question
