Light Fixture Needed

This room is very dark. I want to replace the light in the loft and in the stairway, but need ideas. My husband is against getting a ceiling fan because we have them just about in every room.

I would run a rail light down the stairwell or convert that to a can light and add one more.

For the room, I see its kind of a hang-out kids area, but what is the style you like?

What is a rail light? Like movie theater lights to light up the way? For the loft, it’s an office/play room area. Very casual relaxing and not for public entertainment

The wire in the box that feeds the fixture needs to be 90Â° rated wire. If you have attic access this is easily accomplished by adding a j-box to intercept the old feed to the fixture. A short run to the fixture box with 90Â° wire is then made. Depending on how the fixture box is fed this may require 2 boxes (power in one direction, switch loop out other direction) If you are installing a lot of new fixtures it may be easier in the long run to pull a new circuit to feed the fixtures. The switch loop can be intercepted and the extension to the fixture box can then be in one j-box. This will also provide a means to ground the fixtures.

Not only do they not need to match, you will end up with a more interesting mix of lighting if you don't go with the matching set. They do need to work together and the glass should be the same if they are close together so the answer depends on how much glass is in the chandelier and whether you see both at the same time. I looked up the Uttermost Gelati and saw they are small so the glass difference might not be too much of a problem.

You will not find a different cover to fit and are stuck with the existing cloud type. The wiring of the fixture has nothing to do with it, it is the housing within the ceiling. You would need an electrician to install and connect either: - a new recessed lumenaire, after removing the existing housing, which requires some drywall patchwork; - a new ceiling box for a surface mount fixture, after removing the existing housing, which requires some drywall patchwork; - an LED surface mount fixture large enough to cover the existing housing (or jerry-rig a coverplate), connected via an Edison adapter ===> could be DIY then.

I used to watch a TV show about how to dress properly for your size. I always remember the hosts saying "things should go with each other and not necessarily match". So my advice is if the fixtures you like "go with" each other , then use them.. It's your house.

its basically sleek track lighting and would let you light up that stair well and maybe even hang some pictures on the wall.

for the ceiling get a semi-flush, but not too low, that will let light out of the top and bottom, the white ceiling will help spread the light around.

Wow! I never thought about that for the hallway. Love the light for the loft just will try and find that style or size in brushed nickel

One trick you can use right now is to turn the slats of the blinds so that the light reflects off the ceiling.

If you own the home, hire an electrician (or get owners permission) and have recessed lighting installed. You’ll never regret it. Ample light; problem solved.

Aimee, recessed lighting both in the stairwell and the room. And to answer your question, that is a type of cove lighting
