Comments (2)Alabamamommy's kitchen island is wood and marble. I'll post a link below. Beaglesdoitbetter's island is 2 incredible pieces of marble perfectly matched. Do a search for her user name at the bottom of this forum, it will come up. Comments (29)Fwiw, I just mixed faux-marble quartz (Lagoon) with a Carrera backsplash and at least in it's pre-grouted state, I'm really happy. It was hard for me to find a backsplash that worked well with the grey-ish tones of the Lagoon, mostly because my cabinets are painted taupe. Anything that "matched" the cabinets seemed too brownish for the counters. The Carrera blends the two perfectly. I think it also works because I wound up using a very small-scale herringbone pattern, so the patterns in the marble tiles are less pronounced. Fwiw, I don't see the calacutta tiles that the OP posted working with a greyish quartz that's similar to Lagoon, and I'd also be concerned about pattern overload with a subway tile. But having worried about the fake-next-to-real problem, I wanted to at least add my experience that it can be done. One of the prettiest kitchens on here, done by a pro, is GW user @kompy, who used a different marble subway with Lagoon counters, and it looks stunning....See MoreNow, can I mix non-black granite and white marble counters?
Comments (12)Hi 3Daisies, I love the combinations of two different countertops. Seeing some in person and gorgeous photos on GW, I have been swayed. I love the look. And don't be afraid of movement. I know you are looking for something simple but the right rock will look amazing. Have you thought about Jet Mist (Virginia Mist granite) Some have lots of movement but I saw some very simple grayish black slabs with almost no pattern. This looks like soapstone but works like a granite. It could be an option for you. Butcher Block, Quartz Black, Pearl Gray, Blue Pearl (Which can look gray), Slate, Soapstone, Nordic Black Granite, Azul Aran (has movement but looks nice with white marble) .... so many to list. Here are some ideas, to keep your mind working on this wonderful kitchen. In time you will find your favorite combination and it will look great. ~boxerpups AnneKendo's Kitchen from Garden Web post Colleen Mill's Kitchen from Garden Web post This is the same on island as counter but it is lovely and I thought you might like this as an idea. Comments (11)Eam, It is 9/64 walnut over an MDF core. But we have it, so we're using it. if it only lasts 5 years and we have to get real butcher block at that time, I'm perfectly ok with that. We're doing quite a lot, and electrical alone will cost more than $6,000, out of a $30k budget, so we'll do what we need to. We don't already have the counter for the peninsula or espresso bar, so that's the part that's still flexible. Mamagoose, here is my Original layout thread. And above is actually the current working layout (didn't realize I posted the wrong one) with your suggested adjustment made in the prep area. I've added a 12' pullout to the right of the range and theres trash and a drawer stack to the left. We may not be able to move the dishwasher...the 2 1/2" sink waste pipe is outside the wall on that side, but we will if we can move the pipe back into the wall without too much added cost. We do have an 18" counter for oven landing. We went a bit bigger than the NKBA minimum, but not much. I can put a cookie sheet on it, so it gives me a bigger opening and coffee bar. I'd actually like to make it a full height pantry cabinet with pull out surface, but since that's the walkway, albeit a wide one, it's probably not ideal. And this photo that I found after I posted gives me hope that it might work. I did price it out today, and the cost would be about the same as doing same wood on the peninsula and stone on the coffee bar. So that doesn't help with the decision. Ali...See MoreB P
