Feverfew question

On a whim, I picked up "Golden Moss" feverfew from a local nursery, the chartreuse foliage was lively and caught my eye. Got home and looked up feverfew on-line and read it repels insects, including bees. In your experience, is this correct? If so, I need to site it in an area where pollinators don't frequent, which is going to be hard to do because even in the shadier parts of the garden I have things that are attractive to the buzzers. If it's a really strong repellant (say, more than just a foot or two) I'm going to need eat the $10 and re-home it.

Yes, it can repel honeybees along with some other pollenators- but it still does attract some little hoverflies. I don't know how far it's scent spreads.

It's also self-pollenating and self-sowing, so if you are concerned about it shooing away some of your pollenators in the yard, don't plant it in the ground.

On the bright side, they do rather well in containers, and can be great on your porch or outside your door to help ward off insects from those specific areas.

Wow, this really surprises me! I have an awful lot of feverfew - it reseeds everywhere and I leave most of it - and my yard is swarming with bees!

I'm going to have to pay more attention and see if there are any bees up close to the feverfew.

In addition feverfew may be of help in certain skin conditions (i.e. eczema and rosacea); on the other hand it can cause skin irritation in susceptible people. If the feverfew is growing near a cornfield, I'd be concerned about possible pesticide/herbicide drift and contamination - might be best to save seed and plant in another location.

Question Chamomile or other ground cover

Laura, Your chamomile is really pretty. I always thought it grew closer to the ground. I don't want to walk on any ground cover, because it will be in between rocks. But I don't want it to get too tall or it would just look like an over grown rock bed with weeds. Or why go to all the trouble of buying rocks only to have them covered up. Karen, About 3 years ago I put in a six pack of Mother of Thyme. It really took off in that spot. It smells great if you do have to walk on it. And it is a bug/ bee magnat. Then last year, it looked all woody and half killed off. This could have been due to our ice storm, or maybe thyme needs cleaned up and trimmed up to look its best. If you don't want alot of bugs & bees, I would keep it trimmed down. The flowers last forever! It does reseed happily and I moved some around to other parts of my garden. Mo Girl, I don't think you will have a problem transplanting your thyme. I takes some pretty good abuse. While looking for a white ground cover I came across this. Looks like quite the little gem! Check it out. I also checked to see if I could find seeds over plants. And was able to find seeds too. It may to late to WS these, I don't know. Question regarding baby's breath

In order to get season-long annual Baby's Breath (Gypsophila) you need to succession-plant them. That means you make several different plantings, weeks or months apart. I don't know what timing is best for you, in fact I've forgotton what timing worked for me. I'd try once a month throughout spring here, but I have a short season, so anything not planted by the end of spring isn't going to bloom. Your timing will be different. As Heidi noted above, perennial gypsophila doesn't solve the problem, since it blooms all at once also. If you want a lot for drying, perennial is great, since it produces huge amounts of stems once the plant is mature. Succession-planting it doesn't help, since it doesn't bloom until its second summer anyway. By then the plants will have adjusted themselves to the climate and will bloom all at once. Jeanne

There was a feverfew bush planted in the community garden I now supervise. Last year, my first experience with it was that it grew 2-3' tall, and about that wide, and bloomed profusely. I didn't deadhead, and think I got two blooms. But, it was much bigger than I expected, though the green stayed pretty well too. I'm in Denver, and our summer was quite hot and dry last year, in full intense high-altitude sun. Unfortunately, it didn't survive our crazy spring cold here this year.

You really have nothing to worry about from a bit of Feverfew. There are many pollinators beside bees and its not going to scare them away from your other flowers. It has no noticeable effect in my garden. I can't find definitive reliable info on whether its even true they dislike it. Perhaps its not their favourite forage but then nor are many of the things we grow and it’s certainly not going to hurt them. They'll just move on to a preferable plant.

Before I read anything about bee repeling I planted some by my roses. It had no effect on leaf cutter bees which I welcome, If it does repel bees, I suspect it may be limited to the plant itself.
