Design Dilemma Kitchens Remodeling

Counter top installation

We are doing a first time renovation and I was not sure if the contractor is installing the counter top right. He put plywood on top on cabinets. The cabinets have a solid thick wood behind them and the counter top hangs over that. The over hang is 10". When I look under the plywood I see a gap and he does not plan to add any brackets. We will be installing a quartz countertop which is being fabricated. Is this correct ? Thank you.

Could that plywood be temporary? Is it possible that contractor is using plywood to add more visual thickness to the countertop?

I would strongly recommend AGAINST buying ANY CounterBalance product... they will completely hose the homeowner / DYI consumer. Just compare the price for the brackets between http://counterbalanceshop.com and http://www.chemical-concepts.com/counterbalance.php The same product will cost you $114 at the first site and $81 at the second. Really??? THEY ARE BOTH THE SAME VENDOR. I tried to place an order based upon the info on the Chemical site (didn't even know about the counterbalance site) and they wouldn't honor the price posted. Don't do business with this vendor who isn't interested in doing business with you. Vendor's words: "I could care less about" selling to consumers. STAY AWAY !!! Find a local machine shop who is interested in doing business at a fair price/profit. The product is a VERY simple job for any machine shop to produce. Chemical concepts doesn't even make the product -- they sell glue. For the person who wanted to know where they could get metal support bars, here is an option: http://metalworking.mscdirect.com/CGI/MWSRCH?N=32003649 I don't have any experience with them, so I don't know if their prices/policies are good or bad. I just found them from doing a bit of searching.

I wouldn't change it since it's so minor. As jannicone said, there's danger of something not minor happening as a result of redoing it. My Corian countertop has a similar junction, but was done differently. The counter top bullnose was not taken to the wall but changed into a straight face to meet up with the back splash and wall. For that matter, the rounded edge of the back splash was squared up to meet the counter top. But even with this, the back splash hangs over the edge very slightly.

You are over reacting. It is common to need to do some drywall work and touch up following counter install. Granite has a crystalline structure. Very often a newly installed counter will have small crystals popping out for quite a while. You can rub it with steel wool every so often until it stops shedding. That too is normal. Never ever use the nuclear option until you are sure that you are in the right. You are not here, and it makes you look completely unreasonable.

Thank you. The plywood is permanent. The counter will go on to it. I will check out the manual. Thank you.

I am a fabricator. 10" overhang is no problem. The plywood underlayment is unnecessary.

We were asked to put 3/4 plywood on top of cabinets extending to overhang by the quartz fabricaters we used and they did a great job. Overhang seems very strong without any extra support other than ir OSB board underneath.

I think some of this is regional. In CA most slabs sold are 2 cm and most installers will place a layer of plywood under all the granite, quartzite or quartz.

The plywood was not leveled and hence the gaps. The contractor re did the plywood and it's leveled now . Thanks!
