Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Placement of shampoo and soap holders?

All of the bathrooms in our new to us cabin have horrible fiberglass tub/shower combos. The only place to put shampoo and soap is in those premolded little ledges. The previous owners left caddies that were hung from the shower arms. I removed those immediately as I recall being told years ago that the weight on the shower arm can cause stress and eventual leaks. So I bought these stick on units to use until I have the time and funds to remodel the bathrooms.

The units are pretty narrow and I find them claustrophobia inducing. I had shower/tub units in my last house but they were a bit bigger I feel.

Any thoughts on these locations?

We have international students and they use the same bathroom they just have a little caddy they have all their stuf in for showers and bring it in and take it away I think this is a great way to keep bathroom clutter to a min and unless you use the over the door type caddy IMO the best answer.

I think #1 would be easy to bump while standing under the water. #3 seems like a good location to me.

I use liquid soap all throughout my house. Which would seem to solve the sliver problem, but then I have the tiny bit left at the bottom of the bottle that won't pump out! So then I have a collection of mostly used soap bottles hanging around :) I have a friend who dilutes her liquid soap, but she keeps diluting it until there's no soapiness! I think I've mentioned "Clean the World" on here before, it's a non-profit that recycles the barely used soap from hotels and sends it to places that need it: shelters, Haiti, ect. I think it is the COOLEST thing. Someone saw waste and a way to fill a need. Last year or so, well maybe longer, probably 2009, one of the major news stations did a story over them, that's how I heard about them. Here is a link that might be useful: Clean the World

I agree, Niche's are great and have fun with them. I did 2, one is very large and holds lots of stuff but I keep it to a minimum it also doubles as a foot rest when shaving and the other is long and skinny with 4 shelves that are pretty much out of water splash zone. The top shelf is for a stack of wash cloths that are stocked at all times, never will I have to hear the pounding on the walls followed by "Can you bring me a wash cloth?" Next shelf for Face wash like Noxema and 3rd shelf is for his and hers razors the bottom shelf is a bar of soap that sits on a folded clean dry washcloth so that the soap dries nice and no soapy mess to ever clean up. Have fun with it! And build in the organization.

Most towel bars have inserts on the backs of them, so that once the wall tile is cut out to fit them, they get thinsetted in, and taped up until the thinset dries. Once the thinset is dry, those towel bar posts aren't going anywhere. As for the niche, the easiest way for someone who's DIYing it would be to get one that's prefab, and all you do is cut a hole, rabbit the edges to get it to sit flush, and screw it in with a bead of caulking on the back of the lip to kep it watertight. I ddi a lot of research looking for just the right niches and ended up buying the Fin Pan PreFormed Niches at flooringsupplyshop,com. We looked at the Noble, the Recess-It and the Duk before settling on this one. We ended up buying 4 of the combo niches because we wanted small and large niches as you do. We cut off two of the smaller niches and installed them as 4 larger and two smaller, instead of 4 of each. We are very happy with them; they installed very easily. I’d actually consider putting it under the shower head - that way it stays “pretty” dry and you don’t have to step out of the shower stream to get them (if you put it on the back wall). We had something similar (the ones that you actually put the shampoo/cream rinse/body gel) directly into the containers and push the button to squirt it out) and that’s where we put them and it worked well.

I'd put the caddies back up on the shower arms. The only reason those arms would leak is improper assembly, they are metal pipes screwed into metal fittings mounted to the wall. They can take the weight of shampoo, etc. with no problems.

I'd put up a caddy on the shower arm. If you're worried aboutthe weight, you have too much stuff! Or as far as you can, keep te caddy away from te spray.

Put bar soap in a high molded area which doesn’t get direct shower spray. Put a small plastic kids’ table outside just next to the tub where you can reach it. Top the table with a washcloth to absorb any moisture. Shampoo and conditioner can go there.

I looked at the pressure mounted corner tower and decided against it because in these fibergass units the corners are sloped. So the tower would end up way into the footprint of the shower.

I didn’t hang the old caddy back up as it was cheap vinyl covered wire and was cracked and the wire parts were rusting and flaking. Plus they were way too high up. I prefer stuff in the shower be at elbow to shoulder height. Especially stuff in a pump bottle.
