Brushed nickel, antique bronze, stainless, OH MY!!!
Comments (8)Our house is a traditional Nantucket Colonial, so I went pretty traditional. The door knobs are mostly Emtek glass with antique brass (I think they call it French brass). Most of our hardware, lighting, etc. is antique brass or natural brass (which will get a patina with age). The bathroom on the first floor is done in antique brass, but the full bathrooms (upstairs) are done in polished chrome. The mudroom is brushed nickel door hardware with polished chrome schoolhouse lights. The kitchen has brass lights and hardware, but a chrome faucet (it was traditional to have a chrome faucet in older houses). I may change the faucet to antique brass, but I'm having trouble finding one that will fit the drilled holes. I am not a fan of brushed finishes, especially in traditional houses. To me brushed is very utilitarian (the reason I used it in my mudroom). If I had it to do over I would have used the brass in the mudroom as well, but those light fixtures are too expensive to replace (3 schoolhouse lights plus a wall sconce). I wouldn't get hardware at HD. If you have brass in one room and chrome in the next, make sure you get split doorknobs (brass on one side, chrome on the other). The hinges should be the color of the hardware of the room the door swings into....See MoreOil rubbed bronze light with brushed nickel hardware?
Comments (2)I was researching this a few days ago as well, and found some articles that said this is not considered wrong from a design standpoint. It sounded like it was more acceptable to mix finishes now, and some people prefer the not so matchy look anyway. I was curious because I have 3 rooms that flow together and I have brushed nickel in two rooms. In the 3rd room I wanted to put in a ORB light. I think it will work fine. I actually just replaced the windows with ORB double curtain rods (and these flow through two rooms). I also read that if you can add at least a couple pieces in that particular finish it will look even better.... so I felt having the curtain rods and the light would make it work, but I think even without, it's ok. Buy what you love, that is most important!...See MoreOil-rubbed bronze or brushed nickel hardware?
Comments (21)I selected ORB for my kitchen, and as it turned out I got a cheapy orb for the handles and they do not show ANY kind of wear at all. I have had them in place for about 2 years(or is it 3?( and I am still enjoying them. I should stress that we are not gentle people and we do not baby things in the house:)so that is saying that it is most durable. I like the warmth of the look. I agree that the hardware is relatively inexpensive to replace - but I also don't see them looking dated anytime too soon. Things do definitely go in cycles as we have all noted that brass is kind of coming back in. I wholeheartedly encourage you to get what you like, and you will really enjoy it....See MoreDo oil rubbed bronze doorknobs go with brushed nickel cabinet hardware
Comments (8)I am dealing with this right now! We chose brushed nickel because getting matte black everywhere would cost like $7k(this would include all doors, lighting and kitchen/bathroom fixtures); our builder does offer brushed bronze for like $500 for everything. I don't like ORB personally so didn't want to get it just to get it. I do know people are mixing metals A LOT these days. Black matte with champagne brass or ORB with brushed nickel. We plan to change the guest bathrooms to matte black everything; yet the rest of our home will be brushed nickel, as far as the other doors and light fixtures(until we get the mooshie moosh to change them). Unless, everything is all the same throughout your home, mixing metals is going to happen. Exterior does not have to match interior. I would treat these as completely different spaces in regard to fixtures and or color choice(psst, black matte exterior/brush nickel interior for us because this is affordable at this time due to financial restraints). Will post pics in 1/2 months when completed. So, I guess the real question here is, do YOU like the look of mixed metals? :D...See More
