How to retrofit a kitchen cabinet for a deeper wall oven?
I was trying to replace a discontinued model of a broken 30" Whirlpool wall oven with another Whirlpool and realized that my cabinets are too shallow. The cutout depth of the old oven is 23-1/4" and the new one is 24", so the cabinet is about 3/4" shallower than it needs to be. (Okay, to be precise, the cabinet may be the required depth, but there is an electric enclosure and gas line on the way.) Anyway, I was thinking about returning the appliance, but pretty much everything I saw (and there are not many available due to supply issues) is 24" deep (saw a couple that are 23-1/2" but they are a few hundred more expensive and I'd still need to fill a 1/4" gap). So, I think my only option is modifying the cabinet to add some front filler pieces. Did anyone have to do this? Any ideas or suggestions? TIA

Comments (11)mrtimewise...thanks for the reminder on the water & electrical cables. We are doing plumbing & electric on our own so we can move them as needed. But I talked to the cabinet guy and he said the panels are normally 3/4" instead of the 3/8" like I thought. So, 24 1/2" + 3/4"=25 1/4". My stove is a Dacor duel fuel that I was planning on having 2 bump-outs next to it since it is deeper. Those bumpouts would be out to 26 1/8". I am considering just putting the entire cabinet run to 26 1/8"...gives me more counter space and definitely leaves me room for dishwasher connections. I was thinking with less than an inch for the bumpouts (26 1/8"- 25 1/4") that the bumpouts might look odd anyway. Deeper counters sound useful. Comments (19)Thanks for the details trailrunner; your kitchen's personality is so very calming :-) I was planning 21, may go to 22. KD suggests 24 though with 9 feet ceilings, 24 looks a waste of space. What are your tallest appliances and how tall are they if I may ask. OP - Go for it. You'll never regret having more space - you will regret having less space. My uppers range from 16 - 18 inches and my deepest lowers from 22- 29 inches. To avoid the problem of non reachability sjerin mentions, all my lowers are drawers so nothing will get lost. For uppers, I am planning the first shelf to be a flat shelf and all the others (measured carefully to fit various items ) to be roll out trays (1 inch height on sides and a maxi of 4 inches at the back to prevent things from tumbling over) and D shaped Lazy Susans. (Check a very informative recent post on this by Bellsmom). On another note, I learnt a new term today, "Backsplash acne"! Comments (8)I haven't seen them in IKEA but deeper uppers are great for tall folks, and people with vintage, or just generous china. It's also a bonus for those who use pull-outs (that can really minimize cabinet depth) on their uppers. Deeper uppers don't really minimize the utility of counter space - that's affected much more by the distance between the bottom of the upper and the top of the counter. I think the point of the deeper upper is to allow more flexibility. Comments (10)We've thought about a shelf with two separate appliances because we'd definitely be happier being able to choose appliance separately. Having taken the face plate off the front of the current unit so that we could look inside the opening, we now know that in addition to building a shelf, we'd need to put a liner piece of wood over one side of the cavity because what is there is not finish quality material, and we'd need another piece of liner in order to bring the back side forward because now it is too deep for a simple shelf for a microwave to sit on. Is this terribly difficult to do? Taylor's cabinets, can you please explain the filler and overlay filler to me? I do know what you mean about the stain being difficult to match. We just visited a kitchen showroom, and I saw several cabinets where they had to slightly alter the size to insert the new display oven, and despite the fact that the cabinetmaker had done a good job, I could still see the patch. The distance from the wall to the front of the cabinet is about 23-3/4", but it should be enough because the the back part of the oven is 23-1/4" (plus some bolt heads), but it leaves no space for the hoses or wires. I think the problem is the yellow gas line:
The gas juncture (or whatever this thing is called at the top) does not seem to be an issue because the oven has space for it:
There is also space on the left and right sides, so I think that rerouting the gas line to go over the top to the right would solve the problem (the electric wire enclosure can be guided on the left side and the electric junction box see to fit in the gap on the left). Basically, avoid the area inside of the red rectangle:
I guess, I need to check with a plumber to see if this can be done.

2 years agoIn case anyone wonders, I finally got my plumber friend to stop by and we ended up removing the cooktop, installing the oven (with the cooktop out of the way it gave us visibility and allowed rearranging the hoses), and then putting the cooktop back. The only caveat was putting back the cooktop because we could not use the brackets underneath, so just installed it on silicone caulk. Seems to work fine.
