The Old House Remodeling Design Dilemma

Help with metal post in living room

Hi, we just renovated our house by removing a wall between living room & kitchen. As it was a load bearing wall, we installed a metal post to support the roof approx 11 inches away from wall ..

We initially thought of adding another metal post on the opposite side and create an entrance to living room from foyer to make it look symmetrical. But just realized if we place another metal post on other side, we will be blocking the entry double door from opening completely.

We can hide that post in a wall but a small portion of wall will be protruding out ... Looking for ideas on how to make this look nicer. Many Thanks!

I'd do a small wall encasing the post.

We had the same problem and decided against a rug under the pool table - looked "off" and we were worried about people tripping on the edges of the rug as they moved around the table. We also have two chairs to the side and did put a rectangular rug under them. We're really happy with the final result. One thing that definitely helped us - foam squares that link together. I think we got them at Target. Using those we were able to outline different rug sizes in every room before actually making a purchase. Very helpful in our decision making.

Although I'm not crazy about the furniture and rug here, I love the satin finish they've painted everywhere - ceiling and walls. Good idea for upgrading your fireplace too. Darker floor like this would be my choice as well.

Thank you, I think..... The rug has gone. I don't like white but do like lighter colors. So after spending several hours - many hours - trolling online photos of charcoal gray couches/wall colors, I am understanding your point and see that you are right. Is there a way to use a white-ish paint and still get a cozy feel? I do not like modern or contemporary and that's what white walls reminds me of. Thank you!!

The large stainless won’t produce much light. The teal glass fixture will distort the colors in the room. Return them both. The first of the two lights you are considering is best. It is visually unobtrusive, does not distort the colors in the room, and is a clean simple style that will stand the test of time. The small amount of brass will not clash with other metals in your room. Alternately, if you want to match your metals, here is a suggestion:

It is a double front door, so flipping it is not an option.

Do a small wall, then put book cases or a mudroom bench or something along the wall opposite the front doors; the stub wall will then help define a space around the bookcase or bench.

I'd build in something that looks intentional around the pole. Maybe tall shelving with a wall that hides the pole like this, connecting to storage that acts as an entry table.

You might consider changing the front door to a large stationary piece of glass or large window with one regular sized door.

Install a beam to support the roof and do away with the post altogether.

Looks like you have 3 choices: 1) leave it as is, 2) enclose it , or, 3) install a beam. It stands out 11 inches, can you live with that?

build a wide coat closet that fills the width of that entry wall, which would conceal the post. make it as shallow as possible, but at least deep enough that a puffy coat on a hanger would fit. give it sliding doors to save space. not sure if that area can fit a closet though? it's hard to tell from your pics.

the closet would be the first thing you see when you walk in, so the doors should be something special. such as this, but not see-through:

not suggesting a barn door for this, I just like the woodwork:
