Why would you want the oven over there away from the main cooking area? A slide in range is cheaper than two appliances and you don't have to buy an additional cabinet plus 30" of counter top. Fine if there is a compelling reason. I would do a slide in range and a 24" deep pantry next to the fridge with pull outs...

I think you will regret having the oven so low and also so close to the fridge. Also there seems to be to much space to get to the island/main prep area if you're carrying hot food. If you need to keep that layout then I would suggest doing a slide in range with cook-top where you have the cook-top placed now and just keep the space next to the fridge as cabinets.

Why do you want an under counter wall oven - I ask because they are less functional than a slide in range especially since you are probably planning to age in place since you are now an empty nester.

You should be thinking of the most ergonomatic choices and typically the under counter wall oven is done for aesthetic reasons and the oven is lower than in a stove. This becomes a factor as you age. You could get an induction slide in range. When I remodeled there were a few models I was considering.

Because I remodeled my kitchen with a view to aging in place, I opted for a side opening wall oven with the oven installed at a perfect height for me. Because it is side opening, I can stand direclty in front of it instead of having to lean over the sides.

I installed a microwave drawer below it because that was the only way I would be able to have a real hood over the cook top (Bosch induction FWIW) and not have it take up counter space.

As others have posted, installing a wall oven is more expensive since the two comparable quality appliances are more expensive. The tall cabinet housing the wall oven is more expensive and installation is more expensive than a simple stove. I also had to upgrade my electrical panel because each appliance needed to be on its own heavy duty circuit. However it was worth it to me to have a wall oven at a comfortable height rather than below the counter.

You could be ahead with the added capability of a 36" cooktop over the 30" you'd have with a slide-in. Your undercounter oven could be a CSO like a Miele XXL. That oven is only 23.5" high. I don't think it would be too low in use. These choices would cost more.

Thanks for the input everyone much appreciated. I may do a slide-In induction range and keep the space next to the fridge for some drawers. I currently have a induction cooktop and love it. The reason I was thinking of a separate wall oven was because I thought I would be able to have the wall oven higher in the undercounter spot next to the refrigerator without the induction cooktop over it.

I was concerned about the extra distance having the oven over by the refrigerator but thought it might work I’m glad I asked.

Why is the fridge on the opposite of the room from the sink? The main kitchen work is prep; that is taking food from the fridge to the sink for cleaning and preparation. The under counter oven is not a good idea, IMO. I want an oven higher than that with with micro above.

@Decoenthusiaste unfortunately the wall that has my sink on it is just over 13 feet and has almost 9 feet of window for a lake view and there is no space to put the refrigerator on that wall. My thinking is that I will be able to put everything on the island from the refrigerator for prep. While this is probably not a ideal setup hopefully it will function.

I’m going to try and find a wall oven to put under a induction cooktop because the slide in induction ranges do not appeal to me because of the aesthetics.

I currently have a GE profile induction cooktop that I love but it does not have a wall oven underneath it I am researching what wall oven’s work under induction cooktops.

@helen yes I really do need to be planning about aging in place - we are in our early 60s and this is our last home. I do have concerns about the oven being lower for sure.

@cate Erickson you are right I do think I would regret the oven over across the room, glad you helped confirm my concern.

@hallett I have a pretty big pantry behind the refrigerator space so I think I will just keep that as a three drawer base with some upper cabinets because of the rest of the kitchen doesn’t have many upper cabinets.
