Can you identify my 28-year-old plant? (photo)
Comments (23)Susan. 74..hey you're still a young chick..:) TKR, you've got it. You must have ESP, lol. Truthfully, I firmly believe it's more of an insurance issue than age. As soon as one of three MRI's were diagnosed, my doc said it was kneed'ed, lol, pun intended, even if corny. The specialist agreed. Suddenly, I'm too young... I had two, unsuccessful surgeries, 'not TKR, however, the same area,' 2000 and 2010. Don't plan on a third. After the doc gave me the news, I asked if there were other options. His reply, 'yep, live on pain meds!' He wasn't the first doc who came to this conclusion. When is your surgery scheduled? Have you done research? All I can say is prepare for horizontal hobbies. Seriously. Since you enjoy reading, stock up on books. Writing, keep several note-pads, paper, pencils, markers, and a laptop handy. Sewing/knitting, whatever..keep items nearby. I've read some people are ordered to total bedrest, as long as 10 months! For me, lying in bed for one-month is impossible. Not with 4 birds, 2 dogs, and 350-400 plants. 'My son is grown, Susan..no other children.' My BIL had TKR done last year..he said he never felt better, wish it was done sooner. I wish you the best of luck and good health. You'll be in my prayers. No inclination or time. Besides, I cannot tolerate rejection...after opening an envelope, unfolding a clean, type-written sheet of paper, then reading, 'Thank You, but,' I gave up. Don't get me wrong. I have plenty ideas, 'but,' :) Susan, after all you've accomplished, your foot is in the door..now all you have to do is open, and step inside. A novel is nothing more than several short stories blended together. A bunch of adjectives, nouns, pronouns, etc... :) Who knows, after surgery you might conjure the perfect, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven King, or Grimms'. You wouldn't feel comfortable in my house since you're a minimalist in decor..lol. The only rooms without plants..a back bathroom...reason, no window..bird room, reason, birds like munching greens, and closets, obvious reasons. It's funny you said your 28-yr-old friend is a virture, regarding your book. Lately, several authors mention and describe numerous plants unrelated to the story. Have you read Wendy Staub, Nora Roberts, Lisa Jackson or Sue Grafton? If you enjoy mystery/suspense, you'll like the above authors. Of all four, Staub really gets into plants. Over the years, a few people have been to GW inquiring plant info. Said they wanted to learn, add to their MS. Wonder if these people were published.. Susan, I enjoy talking to you, too, and wish you the best. Keep me posted about surgery. Or any other topic you wish to discuss. Toni...See MoreHow to get a new plant from an old one
Comments (1)Peonies are propagated by divisions and the fall is the best time. You can take a division from her plants by cutting a section out of hers without digging up the whole plant which could be a big job with old plants. When you divide try and get at least three buds for next years growth as well as a large section of the tuberous root attached. Al...See Moremy one year old traditional bed
Comments (3)Hi justaguy2 Thank you very much for your reply. Meanwhile, I have made second bed(9'x4') with cinder blocks(8"x8"x16") and shovel the compost from the previous bed(10'x30'). As the new beds are small compared to previous bed, they are over flowing with compost. the compost was not really hard packed. I wanted to add vermiculite. We might only get medium grade for reasonable price(haven't shopped around here, only from web knowledge). But my husband doesn't want it as he read that it might contain asbestos and cause lung problem etc. (any thoughts on this?) for now the beds basically contain compost. The previous bed got lots of weeds. but i don't know their names. may be some of them are plants which were from previous year seeds. most of them came out easily with a shovel. As I am tired from all the work that i had already put and also weird weather here from past three to four days I wanted to take a break and stop here for this season and see what i could grow on this. I want to grow organic strawberries for my two year old son who loves it. They are awfully expensive in the store. yesterday i bought 1/2 pound for 3.99$. (I read conventional strawberries are not good for kids as they contain high levels of pesticides) If i make any more beds, that would be for strawberries. Can they be grown in sqft way? how deep the soil should be? where can i buy organic strawberry plants/bare root? and which way is more efficient with good results(bare root/plant)? What brands are good? I haven't planted any thing in my new beds. is it too late to plant spinach, carrots , beetroots? I live in triangle area of NC. This is my second year of my gardening. I am still newbie. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....See Morecheck out our 10 year old kitchen's new look
Comments (19)skitter_2009, Thanks for letting me know that your gorgeous floors are Tokto Laminate Tropical Gingerwood. It is amazing looking that it looks so real and gorgeous. It seems that you have to buy a minimum amount (a Pallet) so I am wondering how many square feet are in a Pallet? I may call Build Direct and ask for a sample. Some laminates are so well made and really are gorgeous in the pictures I am seeing. I really love the changes you have made especially with the plates on the wall above the beautiful cabinets with the updated beautiful black hardware, the adorable "cookie jars" with the matching towel over the oven handle that looks so pretty, the beautiful island, the beautiful counters, the beautiful faucet, and the beautiful lamp over your table. I wish I had a window in my kitchen. The blinds on the window fit right in with your kitchen's new look. I am saving your kitchen to give me ideas when I am ready to update my kitchen since I have only updated my refrigerator so far but the cabinets have to be refaced or replaced but I can't do that now until I replace all the floors in my home first and the appliances that are all slowly falling apart but amazingly lasted so many years....See Moredjacob Z6a SE WI
