why is there tile behind the stove?

This is an incidental finding -- when I removed my range today (donating it - new induction range comes on Saturday), I discovered there is tile behind the stove. Not only tile, but a multicoloured glass mosaic tile. My condo building is 10 years old, if that makes a difference, but I've only been here about 2 months. Do you think they just had an extra piece, or is there some other reason it's back there? The cabinets go all the way to the wall (i.e. these don't go behind the cabinets), but the solid surface countertop stuff on the counters and backsplash does stick out further than these tiles.
