When Life Gives You Lemons !
Comments (19)My mother went totally deaf in one ear from a medical condition, and the other ear is now profoundly hard of hearing from her advancing age. I don't know what to say to her when she complains, as she is not the complaining type. I just ask her if she had to lose either her sight or her hearing which one would she rather keep. Her answer, consistently is her sight. I also remember my grandmother, who for my entire life was blind. She got on very well through innovation and minimal assistance and lived independently until she was quite old. I remember even as a very young child, closing my eyes and trying to do anything, to try to understand what the world was like for Grandma. I couldn't comprehend it then, and I don't think I can now. My heart has wrenched each time you talk about the progression of the loss of your husband's sight. I don't have any platitudes to say either except that having people who love you unconditionally is a great blessing, because more shoulders make the weight lighter. He seems to be positive in his outlook, and I'm sure you beside him has helped....See MoreGiving my sad peppers a new lease on life
Comments (15)I don't toss the old stuff out, I pour it around the in-dirt plants outside the house (I have huge raised beds around the house). I assume though that the majority of the nutrients are used up. Right now I am using "general hydroponics" nutrients, Flora Gro etc. About wastewater... well depending on your local facility, some are equipped to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from the wastes. My local plant has to remove both due to the permit limits and the water body it wastes to. So if these WERE to be poured down the drain (which I am not doing) then the nutrients would still be removed before ending up in a waterbody. (I am actually a wastewater plant specialist) :) Anyhow, I figure that this type of system will have some (a lot?) of negative aspects to it, but it was fun to give it a try. So far the plants I was going to toss are looking great. Hopefully I can keep them going....See MoreWhat about your new build makes your life easier; what doesn't ?
Comments (25)I had lights put in cach closet so they come on when the door is opened and off when closed. I love this feature; no more hunting in a dark closet. Used T5 slim flourescest light fixtures. I also have drawers on all the bottom kitchen cabinets. Makes those dark recesses in the back go away. Did in floor hot water heat which I love. No more drafty forced air. Put a shower valve that controls a hose spigot inside the garage so we can wash the car on the outside concrete pad in the winter. Full extension glides on the kitchen drawers and the soft close on the drawers and the cabinet doors. We are at 5000 ft in northern Wyoming so we did tripple pane casement windows and 2x6 walls with foam insulation on the exteriior wall. I would do double hung windows if I had to do it again becasue the flies like to roost between the inside screen and the window pane. Have at least R50 in the ceiling that's blown in fiberglass. The new stuff that doesn't itch. I also agree with putting plenty of outside spigots and outside electrical plugs. Wish I had more....See MoreLet's talk about these new echinaceas
Comments (30)I sowed Powwow White and Mellow Yellow early last year, they do flower the first year, even in a small pot. In late Autumn I planted them in my garden but I cannot find they coming back this year. Previously I thought it might be the fault of the bunnies all around as these plants may not be not rabbit resistant. The rabbits nearby are all big fans about Asteraceae. But after reading the posts maybe I have mistaken the bunnies. :)...See MoreBunny
