Dark stain on Red Oak v. White Oak Flooring
Comments (6)I went with white oak also because I didn't want red undertones. My flooring co said red oak will usually have red undetones regardless of what color stain is applied. Mine are stained with a mix of 75% Jacobean and 25% Coffee Black (similar to Dark Walnut from the more common stain company). I love them! Not so dark that the show every single speck of dust or cat hair. That sounds like a cleaning nightmare to me! And shout out to Nini whose floor is my inspiration. She graciously supplied her formula to me so I could try to replicate her beautiful floors!...See MoreWhat color stain for my white oak floors??
Comments (20)I'm in the middle of the same decision so I grabbed a piece of our floor and slapped some stain on last night. I apologize for the stripes but I wanted to test a bunch before I go to large pieces (this weekend). The three stains are all Minwax in order, Dark Walnut, English Chestnut and Provincial. The two dark strips in the photo are the mixes that I hadn't wiped off yet. The middle stripe is not that light in person, the flash messed with it, but it is significantly lighter than the provincial. We are hoping for a medium brown without red or orange tones. We don't want too dark for all the reasons people on here don't want too dark. We're currently thinking that Provincial + Dark Walnut will get us where we want to be. Though it might just be dark walnut depending on how it looks on a larger board....See MoreHelp! What color to stain white oak floors?
Comments (5)We have quartersawn white oak floors that have no stain and just an aluminum oxide finish for protection...they were pre-finished in a very matte finish we specified to be put on at the mill. The quarter sawing changes the appearance of the grain so they may look a little different from yours unless yours are also quartersawn? We love the color and though they do scratch a little (we have two VERY active larger dogs, a Border Collie and and English Shepherd)the lighter color hides the scratches so far and doesn't show a lot of dirt. Night shot with flash Daylight with no flash Good luck! Kat :)...See MoreHow to stain Red Oak cabs and White Oak floors to look good
Comments (8)We have white oak kitchen cabinets with a very light stain. Our house was originally built with white oak floors, which we thought were red oak. We had to replace quite a few boards and we used red oak so now we have a red and white oak floor (definitely by accident). I'm with you on the white oak being nicer. Despite the efforts of our floor refinisher, the red oak still has a pinkish cast to it. In order to make the white and red oaks really blend, we would have had to go with darker stain on the floor, which we didn't want. Have you checked local cabinet makers for prices for white oak cabinets. We found that some could only get red oak and others could only get white oak. The guy who could only get white oak wasn't any more expensive than the guy who could only get red oak....See MoreKeen B
