Design Dilemma Kitchens Windows

New life and light to a dark kitchen

I am brightening up a dark kitchen with what I hope will be clever and impactful changes, without a total remodel.

First, we will remove some cabinets (uppers) to make space for a custom box bay window measuring 60(w) 53(h).

Question 1: would you remove the traditional cabinets currently flanking the window, or - remove the corner cabinets and reconfigure the traditional cabinets?

Question 2: the custom window will be a picture window in tue center, flanked by 2 casement windows. Would you add any architectural detail/grids to the picture window or leave it completely open?

For context, this is on the back of a cape and we want to see more of the yard.

IMO no bay window and honestly this will only help during the day so you need to address all the lighting in this space . I would just do a nice larger window cleaning that bay will be a real PITA and it will require cleaning often .The next fixture you get for above the sink would be much better if it lit the sink area not the ceiling.. Can you post a pic of the whole space . Do the rest of the windows in the home have grids ? IMO all wiandows should be alike .All the lighting should be LED 4000K for sure

uggh not the 4k again lol, I would test both 3500 and 4k and see what you like. I do agree bay windows are a PITA had several, they suck. I would keep the regualr cabinets and ditch the corner ones. I hate corner cabs. they always have lost souls way in the back lol.

Sorry, but IMHO, glass shades get lost against your cabinet backdrop. To me, I see "sticks" hanging from the ceiling. What about all bronze pendants? Or bronze with a colored (not amber) glass shade? Cosmos Spring Carnival Frieda, I understood OP to be saying KD recommends either light tones or white for all surfaces but she's afraid of an all white kitchen for her situation. Magic, I recall some discussion of Spring or Winter Carnival on this forum. Try searching Kitchens with those terms to see if you can retrieve them. I have a small, but very naturally well lit kitchen in the country. All surfaces get dirty in mud season with animals, light or dark, right? If you haven't scrolled through Houzz kitchen photos, filtering for wood cabinets, putting every kitchen you like without thinking into an ideabook on your houzz page, do that. Then, look back and see if there are countertop/cabinet patterns. I think it comes down to how each counter works with your cabinets. If you could post photos of those, you'll also get feedback.

If you can change both fan and dining light, then I would have them complement. No recessed lights in the living room? If you must have the fan, then something that hugs the ceiling with a flush mount light too but have primary lighting with an arched lamp and other lamps. Something with silver metal for dining light would complement the kitchen stainless steel/chrome. The type of lighting depends on your style. Same for window fabrics and coloring. You have a neutral background everywhere- what are your favorite colors? Is there a rug in LR with color?

Congratulations on finding a good place with good roommates! Hope your move went smoothly! I always celebrate every move by eating some favourite food particularly pizza I admit and beverage of my choice usually mineral water and grape juice or something like that. I hope you had a chance to celebrate and if not there's always today. I'm glad you like work and it has only challenges you can keep up with. So wonderful that you have places to go that are pretty. Will the large window throw off the proportions? This is not a dream kitchen by any means, I just dont want to make it inadvertently stranger…

Try removing the non-corner cabinets on both sides of the sink. You'll need to know how the sides are finished anyway. See if you like the way it works.

If you leave the corner cabinets up, their shape will match the shape of the counter.

I would remove the corner cabinets and reconfigure. Box bay sounds wonderful and will give you room for plants and to see outside. Well worth any extra cleaning in my opinion. Personally, would skip the grids. Amazing how much light grids block, not to mention they do make cleaning more difficult.

Can't wait to see it done!

P.S. this will totally change your home. I think you will love it (I know I would ;)

Had the box bay in our first home, loved it, no harder tomclean than any other space! Lovely kitchen.

You might consider removing the cabinets beside the window AND the corner cabinets and their garages. Then…see about hanging the side cabinets in the space of the corner cabinets, dead ending into the back/window wall on either side. The entire back wall where the window is located will be open. Then…you can create as big a window as you like. You will gain more functional counter space by removing the side garages than you will by adding a box bay window. But if that is what you want…. Will the sides of the bay open? (Casement?). I might keep grids on the side casement windows and keep the back picture window free of grids. Good luck with your project!

Yup, the corner cabs and garages gotta go, too, IMHO. I would like to see the whole stretch turned into window, but I am ambivalent about the bay concept. Can’t wait to see what you do.

I see your sink pendant has has the wrong color ball been it Bennett it needs to be Daylight like the ceiling lights you need under cabinet lighting If you can spare the the 2 cabinet uppers on each side you could remove but if you wanted to get a drink of water you might miss those cupboards those cupboards and you could get and you could get a larger window that's wider

Get a white or off white reflective paint for your walls to reflect light is reflect light better anasatan yeah and a satin finish
