Flooring Design Dilemma living room

Help! No idea what to do in front of fireplace!

Hi, We had some very ugly red tile in front of the fireplace which our contractor demo'd for us but now I have no idea what to replace it with! Complicating things a bit is I'll probably hire a designer for the living room which is newly expanded.

Originally I was going to replace with slate tile, but the contractor said I should really get a slab. I just dont know if that is the look I want or if its worth the extra price over tile? And I havent been able to find a slate slab as of yet... And I dont know if I should go dark, or if I should go light. Should I get a marble slab? Marble tile? Other possibilities?

I'm very confused as to the best way to go. Eventually I'd like to replace the mantle with a piece of wood and I think we're going to get bult ins hung on the wall on top of the radiators if that helps at all. Any and all ideas welcome! Also if it helps, the floors are going to be stained provincial this week.

What is your style? rustic, traditional, modern, transitional etc... A neutral slab that works with the flooring and fireplace and the style of the home would be timeless.

Whatever you do ensure the finished product is LEVEL with the flooring. Looks better, is easier to clean, is not a trip hazard.

@Rawketgrl Thank you! Style is traditional, leaning toward modern but the house is from late 1920's so cant go too modern..

So slab over tile? I seem to see pictures of both. Leaning toward slab, but given how much over budget this project is given increased costs vs. when we thought we were starting on our reno 18 months ago, looking to potential save where it makes sense.

I think Im leaning toward a lighter slab vs. slate potentially. And yes, will make sure its level.

These are ALL amazing ideas! I am a huge fan of IKEA, so I will definitely check out the Besta cabs - I have a lot of smaller statues and items to display that feel like they could work with shallower shelves. Gwbr - that's an amazing idea. I love the thick mantle and the imbalance of the space. I also certainly have plenty of art to fill any of those walls. Thanks for taking the time to sketch it out for me. Chickadee - I was thinking about panels of some kind all the way up. Speaking of IKEA, I kind of love the idea in the attached URL - they used Nexus yellow/brown drawer fronts -check it out! Thank you everyone for the advice. Was hoping there would be an easy fix, but doesn't sound like it will be easy. We ordered the floor and had it installed by lumber liquidators. We are not happy about it and going to try to talk to a manager tomorrow hopefully we figure out something. Other than that part the rest of the floor looks good just such a bummer :(

I like the topiary trees and the palms... but I don't think them there like that is doing your lovely porch any favors. The palms for for sure overwhelming the spaces. What do you want out of your porch? Simple curb appeal? Somewhere to sit outside and enjoy the porch? Want more than just porch and would like some patio? Or just want nice garden? Landscaped, flowers, veggies or herbs perhaps? I like how celerygirls mockup has the porch enclosed- screened or glass, an enclosed porch can be nice to desirable depending on where you live and otherwise want to use that space.

I am assuming you are keeping the white brick on the fireplace. So any white/light tile you love would work.
