jejvtr: I like the first link you showed, but the second one did not work. You are right the columns look similar. Perhaps you should leave them afterall, they are growing on me. It has a certain delicacy with the arched roof and you may change you mind also once the trim is painted different than the house color. Which is probably another reason my vote is for a non-white base color--to accentuate your lovely trimwork. I'm glad you are looking at other homes similar to yours for inspiration. When we were remodeling last year, I always kept a digital camera in my car and I would snap pics of features/colors/etc of houses I liked--usually while picking up or dropping off my kids from school or sports practices. I would try to drive a bit in the residential areas. Then when we were finalizing paint, I had my paint swatches with me and I would go up to houses which I liked and compare paint swatches. Once you and your DH find an inspiration pic I think this is helpful to narrow down to an actual color. You will always see things we don't, like lighting and how it works from various angles. What does DH think? Still white/red?

Thank you for your replies. I am leaning toward a very soft gray with some green undertone for the cabinets. It's just that there are sooo many choices. Love the gray cabinets photos, Jrueter. Pickle - I will check out Farrow & Ball paints, hopefully someone around here carries them, and see if I can find a BM match. Scrappy - I am familiar with crema marfil; there's also botticino in the same beige family. I'm not sure how common they are as slabs, usually it's all tiles. If you are looking for a beige marble slab, check out travertino romano. I have my heart set on white marble, so back to the drawing board. Thanks again everyone, keep the ideas coming!

Thank you, mclarke! That's what I'm looking for - people who have used these colors and like them, or suggestions for other colors in the same families. I'm glad to hear that you like Trusty Tan and don't feel it had any undertones. The natural pine trim is tricky and makes paints look either too yellow or too pink. Any yellow-y paint is a definite no-go. Trusty Tan should work, I think. Does anyone have ideas about my master bedroom? Will tan walls with a chocolate brown accent wall be too dark and drab? We do have a large south-facing window, so it will be pretty light. But this bedroom is giving me so many sleepless nights! I think I've changed my mind about color about a million times! :)

What kind of condition is the door in now? Is it rough, has it changed colors, any joint separations, How big of a gouge? I suspect the trouble you had with the previous door and stain fluctuation, was the conditioner that you mentioned. What was it? I'm not fully sure of the staining properties of Hemlock, but it probably prevented the stain from penetrating evenly. The sanding shouldn't have caused the stain to vary. If the door is still in good shape,I would sand the door smooth (it should be relatively smooth from the factory)...180 to 220 should be fine, and be sure to sand with the grain. Stain with a good oil based stain, (Minwax is hard to beat-Brush it on with a good bristle brush and wipe it with a soft cloth to keep it even)let it dry 24 hours and buff it lightly with 4/0 steel wool, vacumn it or blow it with compressed air to remove all the dust and apply the finish coat, either satin polyurethane or spar varnish. You can thin the finish coats down and apply several for a really slick finish. The gouge can be repaired either before or after the stain. If it's inconspicuous, you could use a good filler before staining and proceed,(get one that is pre- colored or one that will "take" stain) If it's pretty visible, you may want to get one of the accompanying fillers that matches your stain and put it on after you stain between the stain and the final finish. I think that would be my choice.
