Tile Bathroom Wall

Hello! In my upcoming bathroom remodel, I am debating whether I should extend the bathtub surround tile to the back wall of my bathroom. The field tile I chose is a white Marazzi Middleton 4''x 10'' that has some texture which beautifully reflects the light. I am wondering what you think about doing this versus just keeping the tile in the bathtub area. Thank you for your input!

What does the rest of the room look like? What is on the opposite wall? Extending the tile along just that one wall might look odd, but without seeing the rest of the room, it is hard to tell.

Hi Bill, I have to respectfully disagree. Yes, in our case there were several causes of the water leaking. Improper water proofing membrain installation allowed the water from the multiple leak points to escape the shower and into our basement. However, with the wall tile layed on top of the floor tile, water coming down from the wall through a gap in the caulking where the wall and shower tile meet would have (the theory goes) followed the downward slope of the floor tile to the drain. Hower, with the floor tile next to the wall tile, the water coming down the wall tile and through any gaps in the caulking where the wall / floor tile meet could not follow the downward slop of the floor tile; instead such water found it's way underneath the bottom of the wall tile until it found another gap under the bottom of the verticle wall tile and out past the supposed water proofing membrain, underneath the wood frame, and so on until it met our basement. At least, that was the case with us. I have a 60's small bath, with white tiles on the bottom and darker color on top, including the ceiling painted the same dark color. I like it. Decorating hint: Incorporate the darker color into the lower half of the bath with accessories using varying shades of the dark color. See link below. It takes sustained repeated wetting of tile to damage the substrate. In fact, damaged areas behind tile in showers only occurs in the lower half of the wall. The function of wall tile outside of a shower is to allow easy cleaning of the wall. The tile substrate should be designed like any other wall in the house. If you have a moisture problem in the rest of the house you should use mold resistant drywall in the bathroom too. There are better materials for that purpose than generic greenboard.

When you use large format tiles, you must have flat walls. It may be that your wall needed to be rebuilt so that it is flat. Or maybe the tile setter just did not know what he was doing. I can see that he did not apply the mortar properly because of the gaps. 90%of the back surface of the tile should be covered, applied with a notched trowel. The wall is also covered with mortar with a notched trowel and then the tile is pressed into the mortar. The two surfaces of mortar are stuck together and it would take an effort to pull the tile off. Yours has gaps that allow you to peek down behind the tile. Not right. If the wall was not straight, then you should have paid the workers to shim out the studs to get them even, then installed the wall surface. If you plan to never get those walls wet, it might be okay to put tile on drywall (I am no expert, cannot say for sure). But, if there is also tile over drywall in your shower, it must be torn out and redone. Even using basic cement board alone for walls in a shower is wrong. There are several methods for building a shower, but all of them require a step to waterproof the shower. Waterproofing can be a sheet of plastic properly installed behind cement board, or a membrane applied according to manufacturer’s specifications, or a surface treatment on top of the cement board like Red Guard, applied to the right thickness and using the right tape over the seams and screw heads, or it can be any one of many products applied correctly. The reason I bring up shower waterproofing is that tile people who do rotten jobs will often skip the waterproofing or do it incorrectly. If the guy can’t back butter a tile, can he do waterproofing correctly?

I think either way is fine. If you don't want too much color and you can afford it, go ahead.

That would look nice. Make sure you run the tile up to the ceiling on the adjacent tub wall as well. You might consider more under counter storage as well.

I did that with similar (maybe same) tile and love it. The texture doesn't show in the photos, but in person it has some of that wavy effect. It's not distracting at all. It makes a nice break for the busy tile and tames the dark color above it and keeps the room bright. I used white grout to keep it from getting busy.

This window is causing me so much grief! I was planning on tiling to the ceiling on the tub side wall and the wall with the faucet surrounding the tub. I was wondering now if I don’t tile the whole back wall, how far I should run the tile on the back wall behind the tub in the window area- to the ceiling above the window or not running the tile all the way to the ceiling, just going as high as the top of the window and not above- If I don’t run it to the ceiling, I am thinking that it shouldn’t go to the ceiling on the faucet wall and the side wall either. Thoughts?? I am having such a design dilemma!

What do you guys think about replacing this original window with a similar one that slides and has the screen on the outside- staying with reeded glass? Right now, the indoor screen is pretty old/looks grungy and not energy efficient (single paned). I’m not sure how to replace a screen like this…. Please share your thoughts about this design dilemma, too! If I get a new window would you keep the part where it opens in the shower area still or move it to the other side? Thank you so much!

Regarding the window, I would want the moveable part to be in the main bathroom area. You can open it for reducing the shower steam or just to get a nice breeze in the warmer months.
I think @theresen gave you a good tile layout. You’re using a neutral tile so I doubt it will get into the “too much” arena no matter how high it goes.
